Step 1
In a large skillet, melt the butter. (Browning the butter is optional, it'll be good either way.)
Step 2
Add the brown sugar, salt, and water. Whisk and bring to a rolling boil. Reduce the heat to simmer.

Mix all the dry ingredients in a medium-sized bowl.
Step 4
Add the melted butter, milk, and vanilla. Stir to combine. And stir in chopped apples, if desired.
Step 5
Drop the dumpling mixture into the simmering caramel sauce by tablespoonfuls, leaving a small space between each dumpling.
Step 6
Cover tightly and simmer on low for 20 minutes. Set your timer and DO NOT lift the lid until it's been 20 minutes. (Lifting the lid will result in soggy dumplings.)
Step 7
Serve warm with ice cream.
