Add the bread crumbs and the egg to the meat mixture and continue mixing with your hands.

Press the meat mixture evenly into an 8-inch square baking dish.

Spread the mashed potatoes over the meat using a rubber spatula.

Sprinkle the grated cheese on top of the mashed potatoes.

Sprinkle the cheese with the bacon bits.

Cover the dish with aluminum foil.

Bake the casserole for 30 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake until the cheese is bubbly and golden, for about 10 minutes.
