Step 1
Cream together shortening, white sugar, brown sugar, and peanut butter thoroughly.

Add egg and beat until light and fluffy.

Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt. Add to egg mixture and blend well.
Step 4
Roll dough into an oblong shape 1/4-inch thick.
Step 5
Melt chocolate bits over hot, not boiling water. (In a double boiler.) Cool slightly and spread over rolled out dough with a spatula.
Step 6
Roll up like a jelly roll and chill. Slice 1/4-inch thick.
Step 7
Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake 12 minutes at 375°F.
Step 8
Note: Check the cookies at 10 minutes; I found they baked faster than the recipe card says.
