Apple Crumble Pie

Homemade Pie Crust (my recipe makes 2 crusts; you can halve the crust recipe or freeze the 2nd half)

Tablespoons (30 milliliters) lemon juice

(31 grams) all-purpose flour (spoon & leveled)

cloves

nutmeg

cinnamon

(100 grams) granulated sugar

vanilla extract

(100 grams) packed light or dark brown sugar

(94 grams) all-purpose flour (spoon & leveled)

(95 grams) chopped walnuts

unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

The crust

 Prepare my pie crust recipe through step 5.

Make the filling

 In a large bowl using a rubber spatula or wooden spoon, stir the apples, lemon juice, flour, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla extract together until thoroughly combined. Set filling aside as the oven preheats; this time allows the apples to begin letting off their juice.

Roll out the chilled pie dough

 On a floured work surface, roll out one of the discs of chilled dough (if you made the entire pie dough recipe&#8211; you can freeze the other half of the dough at this time). Turn the dough about a quarter turn after every few rolls until you have a circle 12 inches in diameter. Carefully place the dough into a 9&#215;2 inch pie dish. Tuck it in with your fingers, making sure it is smooth. Spoon the apple filling into the crust, leaving some of the liquid in the bowl&#8211; don&#8217;t want all that in the pie. Use a small paring knife to trim excess dough off the edges. Flute the edges.

Make the crumble topping: 

In a medium bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, flour, and walnuts. Using a rubber spatula, stir in the butter. The crumble topping will be thick and crumbly. Sprinkle over apples.

Place the pie onto a large baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Keeping the pie in the oven, turn the temperature down to 375°F (190°C) and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes. After the first 20 minutes of bake time, I place a pie crust shield on top of the pie to prevent the edges from browning too quickly.

Allow the pie to cool for 3 full hours at room temperature before serving. This time allows the filling to thicken up. Serve with vanilla ice cream if desired. Cover pie leftovers tightly and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

This is the best apple pie recipe out there. Never need to search for another recipe again. The crumble topping is so good and easy!! Thanks- Sally!

Delicious. First time baking it, but definitely not the last. However, next time I'll blind-bake the crust first, as it was too hard and not baked under all the filling. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Yum! I do have a tip for every baker who likes fruit pies. Buy yourself a box of tapioca and put 2 tablespoons of tapioca in every fruit pie you make! You’ll never end up with a pie floating in juice. The tapioca is hidden and completely indiscernible but the pie holds a wonderful shape.

Hi Sally! What temperature do I set the oven to originally? I see that it says to lower it to 375 after 20 mins but I didn’t catch the starting temp.

Hi Sally ... This is a superb recipe. My family loves it so much. 
Overall the pie turns out well. However, i would like to ask if the base of the crust is meant to be a little soggy from the juices. The side of crust turns out well - flaky and buttery.

Great pie recipe!  I never tried homemade apple pie with crumble topping.  Not my thing - I think I still prefer the double crusted variety.  I think if I made this again - I would hold off on the walnuts and maybe tent with foil sooner to keep from overcooking on the top.

Deep dish apple crumble pie with a flaky pie crust and brown sugar crumble topping.

This Dutch Apple Pie recipe is made with a tender crust filled with juicy, spiced apples and topped with a thick, buttery crumb topping. 

Dutch Apple Pie (Apple Crumble Pie)

pie crust (my recipe will create enough for two crusts)

Granny Smith Apples, peeled and sliced into 1/4- inch pieces

lemon juice

brown sugar

sugar

flour

flour,

butter,

Preheat oven to 375°F. Adjust your oven rack to the lowest position.

Roll out your pie dough to a 12- inch circle and fit it into a 9- inch pie plate, crimping the edges. Place the pie plate in the refrigerator while you do the next steps.

In a large bowl combine the apples, lemon juice, brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Stir to coat evenly. Set aside.

To prepare the topping, combine the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and butter in a medium bowl. Using a pastry cutter or fork blend the mixture together until coarse crumbs form. Using your hands squeeze the mixture together until all the butter is absorbed and your crumb topping comes together.

Remove the pie plate from the refrigerator and spread the apples evenly into the crust, discarding any liquid that has been released from the apples. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly on the apples.

Bake for 50-60 minutes, until the apple mixture is bubbly and the crumb and crust is golden. If the crust and/or crumb begins to brown too quickly cover the pie loosely with foil and/or pie shield. Make sure to bake the pie long enough that the mixture is bubbly to ensure that the bottom crust is cooked. Since you are baking the apples raw they will release juice which can make the bottom crust slightly soggy. Positioning the rack to the lowest position and baking the pie long enough will make sure that the bottom crust bakes properly.

Remove the pie from the oven when done and allow to come to room temperature before slicing.
