These sweet and spicy meatballs are made with ground turkey, cherry peppers and bacon (because who doesn't love bacon!) Topped with a BBQ glaze, they are perfect for weekend gatherings, football appetizers or anytime you want finger foods.

Sweet 'n Spicy BBQ Turkey Meatballs with Bacon

turkey

bacon (4 ounces, roughly chopped)

onion (quartered)

garlic

cherry peppers (I like Trader Joe’s)

basil leaves

thyme

whole wheat panko (or gluten-free panko)

salt

pepper (to taste)

sweet BBQ sauce

ketchup

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

For glaze: In a small bowl, combine barbeque sauce and ketchup. Set aside.

For meatballs: In a food processor fitted with the metal blade, combine bacon, onion, garlic, cherry peppers, basil and thyme. Pulse until combined and uniform in color and texture, about 10 pulses.

In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, egg, panko, salt and pepper.

Add bacon-cherry pepper mixture to bowl and mix until thoroughly combined. Using your hands, form small round meatballs, about the size of a golf ball.

Place the meatballs on a large baking sheet lined with parchment and with a pastry or silicone brush, lightly brush the meatballs with the barbeque-ketchup mixture.

Bake for 12 minutes and then adjust oven to broil. Broil for an additional 4 to 5 minutes, or until meatballs are cooked through and browned.

Meatballs, wrapped with bacon, then glazed with BBQ sauce... You know you are going to try these just by the name! Nobody would blame you, these beauties taste even more amazing than they look.

Thaw out the Meatballs.

Slice Bacon strips in half.

Wrap the Bacon strips around the meatball and pin with a toothpick.

Pick up by the Toothpick and season with one of our famous rubs. (I like the Dirty Bird HOT).

Cook the MOINK Balls indirect until bacon starts to crisp up about 30-45 minutes at 275ºF (135ºC).

When bacon is crisp dunk each MOINK Ball in your favorite Kosmo's Q Sauce (I like the Peach Habanero) and return to the grill until the sauce gets tacky approximately 10-15 minutes.

Preheat oven to 450°F

Cut strips of bacon in half then set aside

In a mixing bowl, mix the ground beef, parmesan, egg, salt and italian seasoning together

Weigh out each meatball at 2oz or eyeball out 9 meatballs. When weighing you may get 9.5 meatballs in the end.

Next, in your hand make a cross with the bacon. Place meatball in the center then fold over bacon around the meatball. You may have to stretch the bacon slightly.

Place covered meatballs bacon fold side down on baking sheet. When this is done you wont need a toothpick because the bacon wont come from under the meatball while cooking

Cook 30-40 minutes in preheated oven.

Top with ketchup or barbecue sauce when removed from oven. If using sugar see notes below. Cool then serve.

Prep: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Spray a square glass pan with non-stick spray.

Partially cook bacon: Place a paper towel on a microwave-safe plate and lay out bacon on top. Place a paper towel over the top and microwave bacon for 4 minutes. Bacon should look partially cooked. If necessary, cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. (Thicker bacon may need more time!) Let cool for a few minutes, until you can handle it easily.

Assemble: Take 1 slice of semi-cooked bacon and wrap it around a meatball. Right when the bacon begins to overlap, fold it over so that you can wrap it around the other side of the meatball. Secure the end with a toothpick and place in prepared pan. Repeat process with remaining bacon &amp; meatballs.

Drizzle a little over half the maple syrup over the uncooked bacon meatballs.

Bake: Bake in a 400-degree oven for 15-25 minutes. Cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your bacon and how well done you&#39;d like it. My bacon was thick and I like it well done, so I cooked them for the full 25 minutes.

Drizzle meatballs with remaining maple syrup just prior to serving. I transferred them to a serving dish, then drizzled them. Serve hot and enjoy!

Prep Oven and Pan

Preheat your oven to 425°F and line a large rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil for easy cleanup.

Prepare the Onions

Slice the top and bottom off each onion and peel away the outer skin. Cut each onion in half from top to bottom, then carefully remove the 2 outer layers from each half, giving you 8 onion 'shells'.

Make the Meat Mixture

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, 3 tablespoons barbecue sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix with your hands until just combined - don't overwork it.

Portion the Meat

Divide the meat mixture into 8 equal portions, roughly 4 ounces each. This ensures all your onion bombs will be the same size.

Form Cheese-Stuffed Meatballs

Flatten one portion of meat in your palm to a 3-4 inch disc. Place a cheese cube in the center and wrap the meat around it, sealing completely to form a meatball.

Add Onion Layers

Place two matching onion halves on either side of each meatball, covering most of the surface. Choose onion pieces that fit your meatball size best.

Wrap with Bacon

Lay 2 bacon strips in an X pattern, place the onion bomb in the center, then wrap the bacon up and around. Secure with toothpicks if needed.

First Bake

Place all assembled onion bombs on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes until the bacon starts to crisp and the onions begin to soften.

Glaze and Finish

Remove from oven and brush the tops and sides with the remaining ⅓ cup barbecue sauce. Return to oven for 10-15 minutes until sauce is caramelized and internal temp reaches 160-165°F.

Rest and Serve

Let the onion bombs cool for 5 minutes before serving. This helps them hold together and prevents burns from the molten cheese inside.
