These Cinnamon Baked Cake Donuts are an easy donut recipe you can make quickly at home. With a Caramel Brown Butter Icing, these cake donuts will disappear fast.

Cinnamon Baked Cake Donuts with Caramel Brown Butter Icing

flour

baking powder

cinnamon

nutmeg

salt

sugar

buttermilk, room temp

egg, room temp

vanilla extract

brown sugar ((notes))

water

milk

icing sugar

Prep: Preheat the oven to 180C / 350F / 160C fan forced. Spray a doughnut pan with oil spray. Have a piping bag at the ready (see notes)

Dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and sugar until thoroughly combined.

Wet ingredients: Whisk together the buttermilk, egg, melted butter and vanilla until completely combined, then add to the dry ingredients and fold together with a spatula.

Rub the oil around in the doughnut tin so each hole is nicely coated. Spoon the batter into your piping bag and pipe into the tin holes, to about 3/4 full.

Bake for 10 minutes - a toothpick should come out clean. Allow them to cool for 5 minutes in the tin before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Then you can use the empty doughnut pan to pipe and bake the last one.

FOR THE DONUTS

Place the butter in a saucepan over low heat. Bring to a simmer and cook swirling the pan often until it turns a golden brown colour. Strain the butter into a bowl and discard any black sediment.

Wipe out the saucepan and add the brown sugar and water. Stir over low heat until the sugar is no longer grainy, then take it off the heat.

Add the browned butter back to the saucepan, along with the icing sugar and salt. Whisk to combine then add the milk and mix through.

Top the doughnuts: Place your doughnuts, on a rack over a lined baking tray (to catch any drips). Dip the tops into the icing, let a little drip off then turn them up the right way on the rack. Allow to set before serving.

FOR THE BROWN BUTTER ICING

These Baked Chocolate Frosted Cake Donuts are a classic baked cake donut with chocolate ganache frosting. Homemade donuts really are easy &amp; simple to make.

Baked Chocolate Frosted Cake Donuts

vegetable oil

brown sugar

eggs

baking soda

King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour

butter

chocolate chips (dark chocolate is my preference)

honey (agave nectar

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Lightly grease 2 donut pans.

In a medium-sized mixing bowl or mixer beat together the butter, vegetable oil, granulated, and brown sugar until smooth. Add the eggs and beat until well combined.

Mix in baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla, until batter comes together.

Mix in the flour and milk, adding the flour and alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour. Mix batter until smooth and well combined.

Gently spoon the batter evenly into the lightly greased doughnut pans, filling until just shy of the rim.

Place pans in the oven and bake for 9-10 minutes. Remove from oven, allow donuts to cool for 5 minutes before you remove from the pans. Prepare frosting during this time.

In a double boiler over medium heat combine butter, chocolate chips and corn syrup. Stir until completely melted and well incorporated.

Once glaze is done and donuts are cool, dip the tops of the donuts into the glaze and turn over, back onto the cooling rack. Glaze side up. Allow glaze to harden, if you wish for 10-15 minutes or like our family, serve right away… yum!

Frosting

These old-fashioned donuts are soft and cakey with a hint of nutmeg on the inside and finished with a crunchy cinnamon-sugar coating.

Baked Old-Fashioned Donuts

(250 grams) all-purpose flour

(150 grams) granulated sugar

tsp baking powder

tsp cinnamon

tsp salt

(180 milliliters) buttermilk

Tbsp vegetable oil

tsp vanilla extract

(50 grams) granulated sugar

Preheat oven to 425°F. Spray two 6-cavity doughnut pans with non-stick cooking spray.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

In a small bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, vegetable oil and vanilla extract.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture and gently stir together until just combined.

Divide the batter into the prepared donut pans, filling almost full.

Bake for 7-9 minutes or until the tops spring back when lightly pressed.

In a small bowl, mix together the sugar and cinnamon.

As soon as the donuts have cooled enough to handle (but still warm), remove from pan and coat in cinnamon-sugar. Set on a wire rack to cool. 

Tip - If you have any trouble with the cinnamon-sugar sticking, lightly brush the donuts with a bit of melted butter and that should help.

These donuts are so yummy and easy to make.. my hubby loves them as does the whole family

Best donut recipe EVER! I’ve made this soooo many times and they always come out perfect. I did use 1/2 cake flour and 1/2 regular flour and they came out even better. Thanks for the great recipe.

These were soo delicious! My toddler was begging me for a donut so we turned it into an activity. They were surprisingly fast to make and easy enough for him to help. 

This was my first time making donuts and I was not disappointed! These were excellent ! I substituted one cup of flour for cake flour and they came out light and wonderful! Very tasty. Did brush of melted butter on one half, and chocolate ganache with sprinkles on other half. Thank you so much for this great recipe! Look forward to trying more of you recipes.

I followed the  recipe ( I used coconut oil/2 TABs for the oil),but my donuts did not turn out brown on top, they were a beige color.  I had to bake them for 5 mins longer than 9 mins before they sprung back.  I noticed they started to turn brown on top, after lengthening the time, but barely noticeable.

My daughter told me “mom! These taste gooder than the ones Grandpa buys at the store!” 

Definitely saving this recipe. Sooooo good!!!
