Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipe - Add A Pinch

This sweet and tangy Memphis barbecue sauce is the perfect complement to pork, beef, or chicken. With a touch of spice, it is the best homemade bbq sauce for special occasions, or make it your everyday sauce.

Memphis Barbecue Sauce

ketchup (Heinz or Hunts)

mustard

brown sugar (firmly packed)

Worcestershire sauce

chili powder

black pepper

onion powder

garlic powder

celery salt

liquid smoke (optional but recommended)

cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)

Combine in a non-reactive saucepan with a glass lid : 2 cups Heinz or Hunts Ketchup, 1/4-1/2 cup yellow mustard, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar, 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoon chili powder, 1 tablespoon black pepper, 1 tablespoon onion powder, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 2 teaspoon celery salt, 2 teaspoons liquid smoke, 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper

Place over medium-high heat, stirring aggressively until starting to boil being careful to avoid splatter. This stuff is thick and will burn you.

Reduce heat to low and cover with a glass lid so you can see the action

Occasionally remove from heat and stir well. Please be sure to remove from heat before stirring to prevent splattering and burns.

Simmer for about 30 minutes.

Cup Jarred Tomato Sauce

Cup Blackstrap Molasses

Cup Apple Cider Vinegar

Cup Dark Brown Sugar (Tightly-packed)

Preheat a 3 1/2 quart sauce pot over medium heat. Add olive oil.

Next add onions and sautee for 5 – 6 minutes, stirring often, or until translucent and soft, but not caramelized. Add garlic and stir for another minute.

Add ketchup, tomato puree, molasses, and apple cider vinegar and bring to a simmer. Should take about 5 minutes to come to a simmer.

Finally add brown sugar, salt, cayenne, and black pepper and stir. Using a hand immersion blender, blend the ingredients to grind up the cooked onion and garlic.

Bring back to a simmer and cover for another 20 minutes. Remove from heat, and then using a funnel, pour the sauce into an airtight container with a lid.

This was very tasty!  I did add a squirt of liquid smoke to increase the smokiness of the sauce.  I prefer to make sauces and dressings from scratch and was hoping you would create a BBQ sauce recipe, and this was great!
