Looking for an Italian-inspired meat sauce for your spaghetti? This homemade recipe is the absolute best.

Spaghetti Sauce (The Best)

lb (675 g) sweet

lb (675 g) lean ground beef

olive oil

onions, finely chopped

carrots,

celery,

garlic,

5 1/2 oz (156 ml) tomato paste

28 oz (796 ml) diced Italian tomatoes

28 oz (796 ml) tomato sauce tomatoes

beef broth

(10 ml) dried oregano

cloves

Salt and pepper

In a large saucepan, brown the meat in 30 ml (2 tablespoons) of the oil, half at a time, with the red pepper flakes. Add oil, if needed. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside in a bowl.

In the same saucepan, soften the onions, carrots, celery, and garlic in the remaining oil. Season with salt and pepper. Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute over high heat.

Add the meat, tomatoes, tomato sauce, broth, oregano, and cloves. Bring to a boil and simmer gently, stirring and scraping the bottom of the pan regularly, for about 3 hours or until it thickens. Serve over the pasta of your choice.

Hello. New cooker here. Please help me. For following; 
"2 cans 28 oz (796 ml) diced Italian tomatoes
2 cans 28 oz (796 ml) tomato sauce ..."
Are the listed ml the TOTAL amount or the amount of EACH can should be and thus we need 2?  I ask because diced tomatoes only come in 796ml cans where I shop.

Celery is defined differently in most countries.
CDN sticks=ribs. That's a single 'rib' of celery.
CDN brunch=stalk.
I think it is the same definition as in the US.

You will find in many recipes that there is an equal number of carrots as celery. So 4 carrots = 4 sticks, or 'ribs' of celery.

Add in 1-2 bay leaves, extra oregano, parsley flakes and extra salt.  Its a great recipe just does need a little more for the volume.

Husband and guests found that this taste like homemade catelli. I’ve never eaten catelli, but seeing as it’s canned spaghetti sauce I didn’t exactly take it as a compliment. I like it, but I prefer my own sauce which is even simpler but is full of fresh herbs. This sauce lacks depth. It needs fresh basil, thyme, and oregano. I also had to add a bit of honey to cut the acidity of the tomatoes (and it did wonders). Overall it’s good, but there are better sauces out there.

when you say cloves you mean like cloves you use on ham, how to you remove them after or do you

Excellent flavor with a slight kick from the chilli flakes, cloves add a pleasant aroma and taste. Sauce boasts a rich red eye appealing  color .    I have about a cup of red wine I am contemplating adding .  However, this sauce tastes fabulous as is!!!!

Must admit that i'm very disappointed with this recipe. In my opinion it lacks in flavor. It needs more punch. All i can taste is the tomatoes. unfortunaltely the taste of the italian sausage gets lost in this sea of tomatoes. It's a decent base but i would suggest adding whatever ingredients fits your palate because it's pretty much flat. A couple tsp of oregano isnt nearly enough to properly flavor the sauce.

We were visiting friends in the summer and they served this for dinner - we never ask for seconds and both did on this occasion! My friend shared the recipe and I've now made this several times as it has become our favourite pasta sauce. We're addicted!

Overall great!, I made it twice with both salted and unsalted butter and it was fantastic both times, my children love it and even help me make it,just so they can serve more to themselves :)

So delicious!  I did not add basil or the pepper flakes, but I did throw in 2 smashed garlic cloves along with the salt.

In a heavy pan with lid, cook the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium heat. While browning the meat, use a wooden spatula to break it up into small pieces. Once the meat is fully cooked, drain off all the fat.

With the cooked meat still in the pan, add in the olive oil, onion, celery, bell pepper and garlic. Continue cooking until the veggies are tender. Add in the canned mushrooms (drained), Italian parsley, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, beef broth, apple cider vinegar, sugar, all of the spices and the bay leaves. Stir well until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Bring the spaghetti sauce to a brief boil, then cover the pot with a lid and dial down the heat to low. Allow the meat sauce to continue to simmer for 2-1/2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally.

Remove the two bay leaves from the pot. If desired, sprinkle the sauce with a bit of additional fresh parsley and parmesan cheese. Serve over spaghetti or your favorite pasta. This homemade spaghetti sauce is also perfect for making lasagna.

In a Dutch oven or other heavy-bottomed pot, cook sausage and ground beef over medium heat for 6 minutes, using a wooden spoon to break apart the meat. Add the onion and garlic; cook and stir until the meat is no longer pink, about 4 more minutes. Drain off the fat.

Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, water, red wine, sugar, salt, Italian seasoning, and cayenne pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for about 2 ½ - 3 hours, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens. Taste and season with additional salt, pepper, or sugar, if necessary.

Serve over cooked spaghetti; garnish with Parmesan cheese and fresh herbs.

Best Spaghetti Sauce with Homemade Meatballs and Sausage

Italian Sausage

onion powder

San Marzano tomatoes with basil

garlic (cloves removed)

basil leaves (loosely packed)

Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese (fresh grated)

panko breadcrumbs

egg (lightly beaten)

garlic powder

cracks black pepper

In a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, add the olive oil and the sausages. Brown the sausages on all sides; they do not have to be cooked through. Remove the sausages and set aside.

Add the tomato paste, oregano, and onion powder to the pot. Stir constantly into the oil to “fry” and release the aromatics for 2 minutes.

Add the crushed tomatoes and roasted garlic.

Tear the basil leaves into the sauce.

Add the cheese and sugar. Mix to combine.

Add the sausages back to the pot, making sure they are covered in sauce. Cover, reduce heat to low and simmer.

Next, make the meatballs. Preheat oven to 425°F. In a large bowl add the ground beef, cheese, breadcrumbs, egg, onion powder, garlic powder, and pepper. Mix all the ingredients together (I like to use my hands for this), but do not overmix.

Roll into 2 tablespoons-sized balls, and place on a sheet tray so they are not touching. Bake for 20 minutes, until golden brown.

Place the meatballs into the sauce. Excess oil and bits of meat will remain on the sheet tray. DO NOT THROW OUT. Place the oven broiler on high. Broil the sheet tray with the bits until everything is golden brown, about 3 minutes. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL. When you take the sheet tray out of the oven, immediately deglaze the pan with the red wine from the sauce ingredients, scraping the bits off the bottom.

Pour everything into the sauce, cover, and let simmer for 4 hours, stirring occasionally. Serve with pasta of your choice and more cheese.

I made this exactly as written in the recipe.  I was surprised with the total simmer time being 4 hours.  I tasted the sauce and meatballs after 1 1/2 hours and the meatballs are perfectly moist and the sauce is delicious.  Since I made it the day before serving to marry the flavors so I am going to cut back the cook time to 2 1/2 hours.  Has anyone else done this?
