This cracker candy is crispy and chocolaty with a sweet buttery toffee finish.

Best Ever Christmas Crack 

(227 grams) unsalted or salted butter

(220 grams) packed light or dark brown sugar

salted saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)

pkg (270 grams-300 grams) milk chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350F. Line a large baking sheet with heavy duty aluminum foil (if using regular foil, spray with non-stick cooking spray for easy removal). Spread the crackers out on the foil in a single layer and fold up the edges of the foil to box in the crackers. Set aside.

In a small saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium-high heat on the stovetop. Bring to a rolling boil. Reduce the heat to medium and continue to boil for 5 minutes (set a timer), stirring occasionally. Quickly pour over the crackers and spread to cover completely.

Bake for 5 minutes in the oven. Turn off heat. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips on top.

Let stand for 1-2 minutes or until the chocolate starts to look shiny and is soft enough spread evenly over the toffee. If the chocolate is still not warm enough to spread after 4 minutes, place it back in the oven for a minute to help soften it.

Top with any additional toppings if desired.

Chill in the refrigerator for about 2 hours to harden. Peel away the foil and break into pieces.

Just made this but used chocolate almond bark instead of chips and shaved it with a cheese grater. Melted almost instantly. Topped with chopped butterfinger. It is primo!

This is absolutely delicious.  Made it for the first time this year!   Added chopped pecans to 1/3, white chocolate chips to 1/3, and M&amp;M's and christmas cookie candies to the other 1/3.  So cute and such a variety!

One of the easiest and most addictive desserts to make and have around! I had to give most of it to family or I risked eating the whole platter.
It’s a recipe I’ll be making each year! I topped with Heath bar bits to half and sea salt on the other half. It doesn’t matter what you put on there, it’s delicious!

I lay toasted slivered almonds on the top before putting it in the oven, I have heavier cookie sheets so it takes about 8 minutes to bubble, when it comes out I usually toss on the Chocolate chips and cover with another cookie sheet, traps the heat and in a few minutes they spread easily, everyone i know loves these!!

I'm hesitant to put a hot cookie sheet in a cold refrigerator glass shelf.  Is it safe?  How long after the bake/spread of chocolate do you wait before putting in the refrigerator?

Preheat oven to 350F.  Line a 9x13-inch or half sheet pan with heavy duty non-stick aluminum foil and spray it very well with cooking spray. Do not try to make this without using this type of foil; you will hate yourself.

In a medium saucepan on the stovetop, combine the butter and brown sugar, and bring to a boil while stirring constantly. Once a boil is reached, reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 3 to 5 minutes or until mixture has thickened to the consistency of a loose caramel sauce. Take care not that your simmer is not too fast/too high because it will be prone to bubbling over or scorching. Stir mixture nearly constantly while mixtures simmers to avoid bubbling over or scorching; the taste of burnt butter and sugar is awful so don’t burn it or you will have to start over.

Carefully pour the mixture over the crackers. Spread it overtop so that all of the crackers are covered.

Bake in the oven for 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool for 5 minutes.

Add the chocolate to a medium heatproof bowl. Microwave on medium power for 1-minute bursts, stirring between each. When the chocolate is almost melted, stir until smooth.&nbsp;

Spoon the chocolate over the crackers, and spread it smooth to completely cover the pan. Decorate with sprinkles.&nbsp;

Let the toffee harden until the chocolate is set. Either at room temperature or in the fridge.

Once completely hardened, remove from the pan peel the aluminum foil off. Break/"crack" it into pieces.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or in the fridge for 10 days.&nbsp;

Christmas Crack Recipe (Saltine Toffee)

saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve, may need a few more or less depending on your jelly roll pan)

brown sugar (well packed)

Line pan.

Line a jelly roll pan (10 x 15 inches) with nonstick foil (or heavy duty foil and and coat with cooking spray).  You can also use a silicone baking mat.

Preheat oven.

Place crackers.

Place the crackers in a single layer on the jelly roll pan. You may have a little space left over - that is perfectly fine.

Start caramel.

Melt brown sugar and butter together in a 3 quart heavy bottomed sauce pan, stirring frequently over medium high heat.

Bring to a boil.

Bring to a boil and boil for 3 full minutes stirring almost continuously. (If using a candy thermometer, you are looking for 270°F-290°F degrees.)

Add vanilla and salt.

Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and salt.

Pour caramel.

Pour caramel mixture over the top of the saltines and spread evenly over the crackers.

Bake.

Bake for 5 minutes in the preheat oven. Caramel should be bubbling vigorously when removed. (If using a candy thermometer, you are looking for 300°F-310°F degrees.)

Add chocolate.

Sprinkle chocolate chips over the top and cover the pan with foil. Let sit for 5 minutes.

Spread chocolate.

Remove foil and use an offset spatula to gently spread melted chocolate.

Add toppings and chill.

Sprinkle on toppings if desired. Let toffee set up at room temperature until completely cooled, or chill in fridge for at least 2 hours.

Cut or crack.

Carefully peel away the foil from the bottom of the toffee and then use your hands to &quot;crack&quot; it or use a knife to cut into pieces.

Enjoy or store.

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

I think my toffee overcooked.  I would have been better off using a candy thermometer since all stoves are different and some "medium" on the cooktop is subjective.  But it was so easy to make.  WE haven't tasted yet....it's in the fridge, but I am sure they will still be yummy because the toffee tasted ok....just a tad "burnt" (almost gave it a sorghum hint).  Thanks for this fun recipe!!

toppings (such as chopped nuts, sprinkles, flaked salt, or candy)

Preheat the oven to 350F. Line a 10x15-inch jelly roll or quarter sheet pan with foil. Lightly spray with cooking spray.

Line the bottom of the pan with a single layer of crackers. Break some in half to fit if needed.

In a small pot, melted butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar. Cook, stirring frequently until the mixture comes to a boil. Boil for 3 minutes or until a candy thermometer reads between 255 and 265F when moved throughout the pot. Immediately pour over the crackers and spread with a spatula to evenly coat them.

Bake for 5 minutes or until the caramel is bubbling throughout most of the pan. Remove the pan from the oven and turn the oven off. Let the tray cool just until the caramel stops bubbling, about 3 minutes.

Sprinkle the chocolate chips all over the top of the caramel and let stand for 10 minutes. Use an offset spatula to spread the chocolate into an even layer all over the top of the caramel. (If the chips aren’t fully melted, place the tray in the warm oven for a minute or two and spread again.)

Sprinkle with the toppings of your choice. Cool for 30 minutes then place in the fridge and chill for at least 2 hours or up to 1 day. Use the foil to lift the candy out of the tray, and peel the foil away. Break the candy into pieces before serving.

Place the peanuts into the bottom of the slow cooker.

Cover the peanuts with the peanut butter chips.

Add the semi sweet and milk chocolate chips.

Layer the white chocolate bark or wafers on the top.

Place the lid on the crockpot, and cook on low for 1 hour.

Remove the lid, stir the mixture well and place the lid back on to cook on low for another 30 minutes.

Stir constantly with a silicone spatula, moving gently in one direction, until the mixture reaches a full boil. Once boiling, stop stirring and let it boil for exactly 3 minutes.

Spread Toffee

After 3 minutes, remove the pot from heat and immediately pour the mixture evenly over the crackers. Use a spatula to spread it as needed; it doesn’t have to be perfect, as it will even out during baking.

Bake

Bake for 5 minutes and then very carefully remove pan from oven. Let stand for 2 minutes and then sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over crackers. Let rest without touching for 5 minutes. Use a clean offset spatula to gently spread and coax the chocolate into an even layer. If adding toppings, sprinkle on immediately.

Harden

Transfer pan to fridge and let chocolate harden for about 30 minutes, or freeze for 15 minutes. Remove from fridge, lift cracker from foil and break or chop into pieces.
