Add the gravy and milk to a small sauce pot and bring to a boil. Add a pinch of nutmeg. Remove from the heat and stir in 6 ounces of shredded gruyere cheese and the parmesan cheese, stir until melted and smooth.

Preheat the the oven to 425 degrees F. Place the 4 bottom halves of the croissants on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, and spread with 1 tablespoon mustard over each. Top with a thin layer of roasted brussels sprouts (or whatever veggies you have) and then spread on a layer of mashed potatoes. Drizzle the cheese sauce over the mashed potatoes. Top with turkey, cranberry sauce and then 2 slices crispy prosciutto. Add the top halve of the croissant and gently push down. Drizzle the top of the bread with more cheese sauce and then add the remaining Gruyère. Bake until cheese sauce is bubbling and evenly browned, about 3–4 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add eggs, season with salt and pepper, and cook until whites are cooked but yolks are still runny, about 3 minutes. Place an egg on top of each sandwich, and serve hot with fresh salt + pepper and a few fried sage leaves. If there is any cheese sauce leftover, drizzle that overtop as well. Grab your forks and knives!

Assemble the sandwich as directed above, leaving off the final drizzle of cheese sauce and cheese. Whisk the brown sugar, eggs and milk in a shallow bowl.

Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a pat of butter. Carefully dip the sandwiches through the egg mixture and place on the hot pan. Cook for 2 to 4 minutes per side or until lightly golden and caramelized. Remove from the skillet and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Drizzle the top of the bread with more cheese sauce and then add the remaining Gruyère. Bake until cheese sauce is bubbling and evenly browned, about 3–4 minutes. Fry the eggs as directed above. Place an egg on top of each sandwich, and serve hot with fresh salt + pepper and a few fried sage leaves. If there is any cheese sauce leftover, drizzle that overtop as well. Grab your forks and knives!

To make the French Toast Version

This easy vegan ham and cheese recipe is dipped in a spicy egg wash then grilled in butter. It&#039;s like a French toast, ham &amp; cheese sandwich!

Vegan Monte Cristo

In a bowl that’s large enough for the bread, whisk the ½ cup of vegan egg, ¼ tsp of smoked paprika, and salt and pepper to taste.

Spread the mustard evenly over one side of a piece of bread and then assemble the sandwich by layering the vegan ham and cheese on top of the mustard. Place the top piece of bread on top and dip both sides in the egg mixture.

In a skillet, heat the pan on medium-high heat and add the butter or oil when the pan is hot. When the butter is completely melted, add the sandwich to the pan and cook for approximately 2 to 3 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy. Flip the sandwich and cook the other side until it’s golden brown and crispy. To help the cheese melt, cover the pan with a lid.

The perfect croque monsieur

First, make a perfect béchamel sauce. Put the milk, cream, garlic, bay leaves and onion in a small pan over a medium heat and stir together. Heat until nearly boiling, then turn the heat off and leave for 10 mins to infuse. Pass the liquid through a sieve and discard the bay and onion.

Melt the butter with the flour in another pan and cook over a gentle heat until it smells biscuity. Gradually whisk in the warm milk and bring to a gentle boil, stirring regularly, then add the Dijon mustard, a little grating of fresh nutmeg and some seasoning. It should be a lovely thick creamy sauce with a deep flavour.

Brush the slices of bread with melted butter. Place them on a baking tray and toast one side under a grill, buttered-side up, until golden. Take them out and heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7.

Turn the bread over and spread each slice with a thin layer of Dijon, followed by a layer of the béchamel. Cover the sauce with grated gruyère, and then a slice of ham. Form the slices into two sandwiches, spread a thin layer of the sauce over the top slice and sprinkle more gruyère on top. Put the sandwiches in the oven and bake for 10-15 mins or until golden. Mix the mustard and mayo together and serve alongside.

Step 1

Arrange a rack in the upper third of the oven and heat the oven to 425ºF. 

Step 1: Make the bechamel:

Melt 2 tablespoons unsalted butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour and whisk until combined, about 1 minute. While whisking constantly, slowly pour in 3/4 cup whole or 2% milk. Bring to a simmer (it will start to thicken up), whisking constantly. 

Step 2: Make the bechamel:

Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard, 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt, and 1/8 teaspoon black pepper, and whisk to combine.

Step 1: Assemble the sandwiches:

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Grate 6 ounces Gruyère cheese on the large holes of a box grater(about 2 cups). Place 4 (1/2-inch) thick slices bread on the baking sheet. Spread 2 tablespoons béchamel on each slice of bread. Divide 6 to 8 ounces sliced ham over the béchamel, bending and folding then as needed to fit. Sprinkle half the cheese on top of the ham.

Step 2: Assemble the sandwiches:

Close the sandwiches with the remaining 4 bread slices. Spread 2 tablespoons béchamel evenly onto each slice of bread. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese.

Step 3: Assemble the sandwiches:

Bake until the edges of the bread are crispy and the tops are starting to brown, about 15 minutes. Heat the oven to broil. Broil until deep golden brown in spots, about 3 minutes more. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Croque Monsieur Recipe

French bread (loaf, not baguette)

oz Shredded Gruyere cheese (about 3 cups, shredded)

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once butter is melted, add the flour into the pot and whisk until a paste forms.

Allow the paste to cook for about 2 minutes, stirring every 20 seconds or so.

After 2 minutes, pour the milk into the pot. Whisk until the milk thickens enough that you can see whisk marks left behind in the roux after your whisk moves through it.

Once thickened, remove from heat. Add the salt, black pepper, nutmeg, and dijon mustard into the bechamel and whisk to combine. Set aside. This is your bechamel sauce.

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees.

On a cookie sheet, lay 4 pieces of bread. Spread about 2 tbsp of bechamel onto each piece of bread.

Add about 1 ounce of shredded cheese on top of the bechamel. Then place 2 pieces of ham on each sandwich and finally, another piece of bread on top.

On top of the top piece of bread, spread another 2 tbsp of bechamel sauce. On top of the bechamel, sprinkle another 1 oz of gruyere cheese.

Place the cookie sheet in the oven for about 4-5 minutes, or until the cheese melts completely.

Once the cheese has melted on the sandwiches, remove the cookie sheet from the oven. Move the top rack of the oven up until it’s directly under the broiler, then turn the oven to a high broil. Put the cookie sheet of sandwiches back on the top rack and broil until the cheese is bubbly and starts to toast. Watch your sandwiches closely at this point, as broiling can cause them to burn easily.

When the cheese is toasted, remove the sandwiches from the oven. Cut with a fork to eat. Enjoy!

Coupez les&amp;nbsp;tranches de pain sans cro&amp;ucirc;te en 4. Ajoutez la moiti&amp;eacute; des tranches de pain au fond du plat.

Badigeonnez vos tranches de pain de mie avec de l&#039;huile d&#039;olive et de l&#039;ail &amp;eacute;minc&amp;eacute;.

Tartinez chaque tranche de pain avec la b&amp;eacute;chamel froide. Pour la faire : faites fondre le beurre sur feu doux puis ajoutez la farine. M&amp;eacute;langez au fouet pendant quelques minutes. Ajoutez le lait froid, petit &amp;agrave; petit, tout en fouettant. Laissez &amp;eacute;paissir, donnez quelques bouillons. Versez dans un bol, ajoutez du film &amp;eacute;tirable &amp;agrave; la surface et mettez au frais.
