Grilled tofu doesn&#x27;t have to be an afterthought. Here I marinate slabs of firm tofu with lemon, garlic, olive oil, oregano, tamari, and maple syrup for a flavorful marinade that doubles as a sauce.

Grilled Tofu

(30 ml) tamari

olive oil oil

(30 ml) maple syrup

lemon

garlic cloves, pressed

salt

black pepper

oregano

In a bowl or measuring pitcher, combine the tamari, oil, maple syrup, lemon zest and juice, garlic, salt, pepper, and oregano. Whisk well to combine as much as possible – the oil will want to separate out.

Press the tofu strips gently with paper towels to remove excess water, then place in a shallow baking pan in a single layer and pour the marinade over the tofu. Let sit at least 30 minutes and preferably 1-2 hours (or cover and chill for up to 2 days).

When ready to cook, wipe the garlic off of the tofu (otherwise it will burn) and reserve the marinade. The tofu tends to stick to grills, so I have the best success searing it in a ceramic non-stick pan over medium-high heat until golden, then transferring it to the hot grill to add caramelization. You can also simply sear it the skillet until deep golden on both sides, 1-2 minutes per side.

Alternatively, make sure your grill or stovetop grill pan is very clean, and oil it well. If using a grill pan, heat the pan over medium-high heat until very hot. If using a grill, set it to medium heat. Place the tofu slices on the grill at an angle and cook until it holds deep grill marks, 1-2 minutes per side.

Remove the tofu to a platter and drizzle with some of the remaining marinade. Leftover marinade can be saved and reused if you like.

Lime wedges and/or cilantro lime dressing

Press the tofu. Wrap each block of tofu in a kitchen towel or paper towels. Place a heavy cast iron skillet on top and let it sit for 30 minutes. This helps squeeze excess water out of the tofu, which keeps it from sticking to the grill.

Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.

Cut each tofu block into 4 slabs and place on a tray or plate. Drizzle the tofu with the avocado oil and sprinkle with your desired seasoning*. Use your hands to coat both sides.

Brush or spray the grill grates with oil. Grill the tofu for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until char marks form and the tofu releases from the grill grates. Remove from the grill and season to taste.

If you seasoned the tofu with fajita seasoning, chili powder, or curry powder, serve with lime wedges and/or cilantro lime dressing. If you seasoned the tofu with tamari, serve with additional tamari or sesame ginger dressing. See the blog post above for additional serving suggestions.

It&#x27;s chillin&#x27; and grillin&#x27; time! Grilled tofu is a fresh summery meal! The citrus marinade combined with the mango salsa makes this grilled tofu recipe the perfect meal for a spring or summer night.

First, carefully remove the tofu from the package, discarding the fluid from the package.  

Then, place the tofu in the middle of the press and turn both knobs equally for about four turns. Finally, I usually put the tofu press in the sink on a plate to drain.

Turn the knobs every two minutes equally until you have the result (the last picture).

Most people stop here…NOT YET. Keep turning until the knobs are screwed as far as they can almost touch the other end. Although I have never tried this, I decided this time I would measure the amount of water I got from the bottom of the plate at the end.

The amount was 3/4 cup of fluid.

Now, remove the press from the plate, and I give it another press with a paper towel for excess fluid removal.

Next, cut tofu into 4 identical slabs.

Press/Prepare Tofu

Whisk all ingredients together and place in a shallow dish with a sealed cover.

Add the pressed tofu squared.

Seal the top and shake the marinade to cover all the tofu.

Place in a refrigerator overnight if possible (a few hours minimum).

I flip the container over whenever I enter the fridge to ensure the tofu absorbs the marinade.

Citrus Mojo Marinade

Preheat the grill to low

Place a grill mat on the grill (you can also use a grill pan, or if you are careful, place the tofu directly on the grill.

Cook for about 8 minutes on each side

Remove from the grill and place back in the marinade until ready to use.  

Then, cut it into strips or cubes.

Follow the same pressing and marinating process. 

Then, preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Place cut or uncut tofu on a silicone baking mat  or parchment paper

Cook for 15 minutes.

Remove from oven and flip tofu over; cook for an additional 15 minutes. 

Baking

Set the air fryer temperature to 375 degrees.

Cook for 10-15 minutes, shaking the basket several times throughout the cooking.

Air Frying

Serve as a steak or cut into strips or cubes.

Add mango salsa if desired.

Serving

A delicious plant-based option for the grill! Grilled Tofu is fast, easy and perfect for grilling on the barbecue. This recipe uses a dry rub, making it very adaptable to different spice mixes and fun flavor profiles.

Cut the tofu in 1/2 inch slabs. Place the tofu on a towel press another towel on top and just give a gentle press- no need to weight it, sometimes this makes the tofu too dry. Let this rest in the towels while you mix the spices.

Mix together salt, pepper, smoked paprika, coriander, onion powder, fennel. Place tofu on a tray or a plate and drizzle olive oil on the tofu and sprinkle half of the spices over it, making sure to coat it mostly even. Flip over and repeat oil and spices on the other side. You can rub with your hands if you need to, to get it spread more evenly.

Heat up the grill for about 10 minutes, let it get hot -you can brush the grates with oil if your grill tends to stick. Place tofu on the hot grill and grill about 5 minutes per side.

Serve with chimichurri sauce for an entree or tuck into a sandwiches, wraps, bowls. So many options.

I love this recipe. The sauce adds a major flavor. I cooked it twice. The second time I decided to add a bit of liquid amino to my tofu after pressing it, and before adding the rub. I thought it was a good addition.

This was excellent. Two of us ate almost an entire block of tofu!   Thank you.
