Skip the heavy, greasy takeout and make a better-for-you version of Honey Walnut Shrimp!  Crispy shrimp in a sweet, creamy sauce is one of our restaurant favorites made even better at home! 

Honey Walnut Shrimp

shrimp

Tablespoons honey

Tablespoon sweetened condensed milk

Stir the water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat until it comes to a boil.  Add walnuts and continue to boil for 2 minutes. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper using a slotted spoon and spread in a single layer.  Set aside.

Glazed Walnuts

In a medium bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, honey and sweetened condensed milk.

Honey Sauce

In a large ziploc bag, combine the cornstarch and salt.  Add the shrimp to the bag, then seal and shake to coat evenly in the cornstarch.

Heat two tablespoons of the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.  

Add half of the shrimp to the skillet, shaking off excess cornstarch first, taking care not to crowd the pan.  Cook until the shrimp curl into a 'c' shape and are pink and crisp on the outside, about 2 minutes per side side. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.  Repeat with the remaining two tablespoons of oil and the remaining shrimp.

Combine the crispy fried shrimp and honey sauce and toss to coat. Sprinkle with candied walnuts and green onions and serve.

Crispy Shrimp

A homemade version of this popular Chinese dish. Crispy shrimp are coated in a sweet, creamy sauce and topped with candied walnuts.

In a small light-colored saucepan, add water and sugar. Bring to a simmer and allow to continue to simmer until syrup turns thick and the color changes to a very light gold color. This should take about 15 minutes.

Add in the walnuts and stir until they are evenly coated in the syrup. Using a slotted spoon, drain walnuts from the syrup and place onto a sheet of parchment paper to dry.

While the syrup is reducing, you can start frying the shrimp. Add oil to pot being used for frying, adding about 1 1/2 inches deep of oil. Bring oil to medium heat.

Set aside whisked egg in a small bowl and cornstarch in another bowl. Coat shrimp in egg and shake off excess egg coating. Then roll shrimp in cornstarch until completely coated. Add to hot oil and cook until shrimp curl up, the coating turns crispy and shrimp are cooked through. Do this in a few batches until all shrimp are fried. Place cooked shrimp on a paper towel-lined plate. Do not wait for the shrimp to turn golden brown. Since these shrimp are battered in cornstarch, the coating will stay pale.

In a small bowl, add mayonnaise, condensed milk and honey. Whisk together sauce ingredients. Start with 1 tbsp of honey and add more if desired. Add shrimp to a large bowl and pour the sauce over shrimp. Gently toss shrimp in the sauce until all shrimp are coated. Place finished shrimp onto a large serving plate and top with candied walnuts. Garnish with scallions. Serve warm.

Add the egg white to the shrimp, stir to combine well. Rinse the walnut halves with water, drain and set aside.

In a bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, honey, condensed milk and lemon juice. Mix well and set aside.

Prepare the Caramel Glaze by heating up 1/2 cup of water until it boils. Add in the sugar and keep stirring until it turns golden color. Add the walnut halves into the caramel.

Lower the heat for another 1-2 minutes, then remove the walnuts and place them on a piece of parchment paper to dry. Make sure the walnuts are not sticking together. (DO NOT use regular paper towels as the walnut halves will stick to the paper.)

Heat up the oil in a pan or wok. Once the oil is heated, coat the shrimp with the corn starch generously. Shake off the excess corn starch before frying the shrimp. When the shrimp is cooked, remove them from the oil and drain on paper towels.

Add the shrimp and toss well with the mayonnaise sauce. Transfer the honey walnut shrimp to a serving platter and top the shrimp with the candied walnuts and serve immediately.

Honey Walnut Shrimp. Crispy shrimp coated in a creamy sweet sauce with crunchy candied walnuts. One of my favorite dishes in Chinese cuisine for good reason! It&#039;s incredibly scrumptious and simple to make at home. Ready in 30 minutes.

Easy Honey Walnut Shrimp

tsp salt

tsp black pepper

cornstarch (or sub with potato starch, tapioca starch, or sweet rice flour)

vegetable oil oil

Japanese mayo (aka Kewpie Mayo (or sub with normal mayo))

tbsp honey

walnut (halves)

tbsp white granulated sugar (or sub with brown sugar)

green onion (finely chopped)

In a small bowl, combine Sauce ingredients. Set aside.

In a small saucepan on medium heat, add sugar followed by water. Stirring constantly, bring to a simmer. Once the syrup thickens and can coat the back of your spatula, quickly add walnuts. Mix to coat evenly.  Once coated, immediately remove pan off heat and remove candied walnuts one by one with tongs and transfer to parchment paper spreading them apart. Set aside.

In a medium bowl, add peeled and deveined shrimp, season with salt and black pepper. Set aside.

In a separate large bowl, add egg whites and whisk until foamy.  Add cornstarch and mix until you have a runny paste. Add seasoned shrimp and mix well until shrimp is coated in batter with tongs or chopsticks.

In a large skillet on medium-high heat, heat vegetable oil or any neutral oil. Once  oil is hot (350-375 degrees F), fry shrimp in batches for 2-3 minutes until crispy and golden brown. Do not overcrowd the pan.  Optional: deep frying the shrimp a second time for 30-45 seconds or until crispier will yield best results for extra crispy shrimp.

Remove fried shrimp from hot oil with a slotted spoon or tongs and transfer to wire rack or paper towel lined baking sheet to drain off excess oil.

In a large bowl, add crispy shrimp, candied walnuts, followed by sauce. Toss everything together. Garnish with green onions. Enjoy while shrimp is crispy!

Heat the honey and water in a small pan over medium-high heat. Once it starts to boil, add the walnuts and stir. Keep stirring until the liquid is mostly gone. Immediately spoon the walnuts onto a piece of parchment paper in a single layer.

In a small-sized bowl, whisk the mayonnaise, honey, and yogurt.

In a medium-sized bowl, whisk the egg and water. Add the shrimp and toss to coat.

Whisk the starch with the salt and pepper in another bowl. Add the shrimp to the bowl - do not pour them from the egg bowl as you don&#39;t want the extra egg. Toss to coat the shrimp in the starch.

Heat ½ inch of oil over medium-high heat. When it is hot, add half of the shrimp. Cook for 1-2 minutes on each side. Place the cooked shrimp in a bowl then repeat with the remaining shrimp.

Just made this tonight with a couple subs. It turned out amazing. Instead of thick yogurt I used yogurt cashew milk and veginnaise, put finished product on brown rice and steamed broccoli tossed in vegan butter. I will be doing this again soon. Thanks for the quick thrown together meal.

Panda Express Honey Walnut Shrimp Recipe

egg white (whisked)

tbsp potato starch (tapioca starch,

avocado oil

walnuts (unsalted whole or chopped)

scallion

tbsp mayo

tbsp honey (or keto honey)

2-2.5 tbsp evaporated milk (or sugar-free coconut condensed milk)

Prepare

Butterfly the shrimp by making a shallow slit cut at the back “spine” of the shrimp.

Coat

Lay out your workspace with a separate bowl for egg, potato starch, and a large plate to catch the shrimp. To start, dip your shrimp in the egg, then move to the tapioca starch to coat it evenly. Place it on the large plate as you work through the batch.

Heat the oil over medium-high heat in stainless steel or cast iron pan that has a high wall to prevent grease from spilling. Test the temperature in about 3 minutes with a wooden chopstick.  if it shows bubbles around the chopstick when inserting it into the oil, the temperature is hot enough. You can also use a thermometer to reach 350F/177C.

Work in batches, and shallow fry for about 3 minutes per side or until golden brown. Rest them over a wire rack to keep them crisp and drain excess oil.

Combine

To make the sauce, combine mayo, honey, and milk in a bowl. Stir-well.

Toss

To sweeten the walnuts, combine them with 2 tbsp of the sauce. Toss well.

Serve

To serve, place the shrimp on a large serving plate and add the walnuts on top. Drizzle with more honey walnut sauce and garnish with scallions. Serve hot.

This was so good! Tasted decadent, was nice and crispy. Very easy to follow instructions and I was able to get all the ingredients from a local Sprouts grocery store.
