Try this homemade beef Chili Dog recipe the next time you&#039;re craving comfort food, for a tailgate menu, or any time you fire up the grill.

Chili Dogs

olive oil

onion (finely chopped (about 1 cup))

red bell pepper

chili powder

cumin

oregano

chipotle chili powder ((see note 2))

thyme

coriander

Salt and black pepper

garlic (minced)

beef

tomatoes

tomato sauce

bay leaf

hot dogs

hot dog buns

cheddar cheese (for garnish, for topping)

red onion (chopped, for topping)

In a Dutch oven or stock pot, heat oil in over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add onions, bell pepper, chili powder, cumin, oregano, chipotle chili powder, thyme, coriander, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper. Cook until vegetables have softened, 7 to 10 minutes.

Stir in garlic until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add beef and cook, breaking up the clumps with a spoon, until the beef is no longer pink, about 5 minutes.

Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and bay leaf. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook for 30 minutes. Remove lid and continue to simmer until the chili has thickened, about 1 hour longer (if chili sticks to the bottom of the pot, stir in 1/2 cup water and continue to simmer). Remove bay leaf and season to taste with salt and pepper.

To make the hot dog chili:

Heat an outdoor grill to medium-high heat, scraping the grill grates clean if needed. Score hot dogs on each side with a sharp knife.

Place the hot dogs on the grill, and grill until well-marked and heated through, about 2 minutes per side. Turn the heat off and carefully toast the buns on the still-warm grill, about 2 minutes.

To assemble, place a hot dog in each bun and top with the chili, cheddar cheese, and red onions, if desired.

Set a large skillet on the stove top over medium high heat. Brown the meat and crumble as small as you can. Drain the fat off and add the meat to the slow cooker.

Add remaininng ingredients and stir.

Cover and cook for 1.5 - 2 hours on high or 3 hours on low, stirring often. This may burn if you leave it unattended too long.

If the hot dog chili sauce gets too thick add a splash of water or a touch more ketchup.

Follow directions above but add everything to the skillet along with the beef. Turn the stove to low and simmer for 20 minutes. Add water or ketchup if it thickens too much.

Slow Cooker Hot Dog Chili

These easy oven baked hot dogs make the best chili dogs you&#039;ll ever taste! Loaded with chili, chopped onion, and melted cheddar, they’re crispy on the outside with soft and savory dogs tucked into fluffy buns. Oven Baked Hotdogs

can of chili (or leftover homemade chili)

cheddar cheese

mayonnaise

mustard

dill relish

Line the inside of hot dog buns with mayonnaise and mustard. Evenly add the relish. Fill with hot dogs and squeeze the stuffed buns into a 9x13 baking pan.

Top hot dogs with chili, diced onion, and cheese. Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Carefully remove from the pan with a spatula and serve.

Hot Dog Chili Recipe

Add 2 tablespoons of the olive oil to a heavy bottomed pot or dutch oven over medium heat, then add the ground beef, salt and pepper. Brown the beef, breaking up into small crumbles as it cooks.

Drain the beef and any grease form the pot and transfer the beef to a bowl.

Turn the heat down to low, then add the other 2 tablespoons of olive oil along with the onions. Cook the onions for 7-8 minutes, frequently stirring so they don&#8217;t burn.

Next add the garlic, tomato paste, cumin and chili powder stirring into the onions and Worcestershire sauce, then add the flour and cook for 1 minute.

Add the beef back to the pot then pour in the broth and stir. Bring to a boil, then turn the heat down to a simmer for 1 1/2 hours.

Taste for seasonings and serve as is or on hot dogs, hamburgers or spooned over french fries!

Really good recipe. I did add a few red pepper flakes to the onions while they were cooking. I did add a little more beef broth only because I used 3 pounds of burger/sausage. Made it day ahead of time like I do all my chili so the flavors really meld together by the time we eat!

The recipe was very good. I have been using a more tomato flavored recipe, but this one tasted classic to me. I'm going to make it again this week.

I used a substitute meat product subbed the beef broth for vegetable broth and it came out fantastic! Used it for chili cheese fries with daiya shreads and used a plant based hotdogs

I was so excited when I found this recipe.  I followed to the T and it didn’t have hardly any taste.  I thought it was my tastebuds so I had my husband taste. My husband kept adding to it until it was just ok but not what I think it should be.  I keep wondering what I missed. ☹️

Is that the right amount of broth? I followed the recipe exactly and it is too dry. Meat soaked up all the liquid.

Turn on saute setting on Instant Pot.

Saute 2 lbs ground beef and 1 cup chopped onion until meat is cooked. (I use the meat grinder tool while I saute it to grind the meat into small pieces.)

Turn off Instant Pot. Add 2 cups ketchup, ¼ cup apple cider vinegar, ¼ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup mustard, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, ½ tsp celery salt, and 1 tbsp chili powder.

Cook on Manual, High for 10 minutes.

Fast release when done.

I am highly allergic to MSG so really have to watch what I eat.  I love that this hot dog chili has no beans.  I don't have an insta pot - I have a Power Pro EL that I absolutely love, but that will work fine too.  I have been using pressure cookers since the 1960's.  Thank you so much for posting it.

I made with ground venison so if you have any very lean meat, it worked perfectly! Easy and delicious, tangy and just the right spicy heat. Will be freezing some for future hot dogs. Pinned the recipe!

We did everything in the frying pan and used half the ketchup. I love garlic so I added like 1/2 teaspoon of garlic but otherwise came out phenomenal!

LOVE this recipe but I got the burn message twice.  Rarely ever happens to me so I’m a bit perplexed.  But, the flavor is fabulous—just then way I like my hot dog chili so I’ll tolerate the burn message. I, too, was born and raised in WV and we ALWAYS had chili on our hot dogs.  I can’t imagine any other way!!! Also, hot dog chili should NOT taste like chili with beans that you serve in a bowl. This one is just right!!!  

Not sure what to do different—after first burn message I made sure the bottom of the pot was scraped “clean” (well, it was “clean” the first time, as well) but it still happened. Like another reviewer I also drained off the rendered grease.  Maybe next time I’ll leave it to have a  little more liquid. Bottom line—5+++  stars for taste, 4 stars only for technique.

Here is tip or hint. I'm from Northern WV where hot dog chilli is an art firm. Do not fry or saute the meat; boil it and attack the meat with a potato masher while it cooks. Drain and use. You lose the fat and gain the right 
mouth feel.

I do not have an instant pot and due to limited space, will not be buying one.  However; I do want to let your followers know that this recipe works absolutely perfectly prepared in a heavy Dutch oven type container.  Just cook slowly on burner for approximately an hour, stirring frequently.  My husband does not like chili on his hot dogs.    He is still talking about how great your recipe was on the hot dogs he devoured!   He said it was the  best chili he had ever tasted.   I am ordering the meat grinder that you suggested just to achieve the consistency of the sauce as pictured on your site.  I am thankful that  I no longer have to research for a hot dog chili recipe  that my husband enjoys.  This is it!

This came out great. My hubby hates hotdog sauce but one bite and he said we will be making more for the freezer. This was also good with tortilla chips and some shredded cheese. I also see this as stuffed avocados also.

Add the chili powder, mustard powder, onion powder, garlic powder, allspice, nutmeg, garlic salt, cumin, celery salt, and cinnamon. Stir to combine, cook for about 2 minutes, until fragrant, stirring constantly.

Add the ketchup, tomato sauce, water, soy sauce, and worcestershire sauce, stir to combine.

Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Take off the cover and continue to simmer for about 40 more minutes, until ¾ of the liquid cooks out, stirring occasionally.

Serve over hot dogs.

Tablespoon kosher salt ((or

Put 2 Tablespoons&#32;vegetable oil in medium sauce pan.

On medium-high heat, saute 1/2&#32;onion, finely chopped, then add 1-2 cloves&#32;garlic, minced.

Stir for about a minute, then add 1 pound&#32;lean ground beef.

As beef begins to brown, use a potato masher to grind up the beef into small bits. If your beef produces a lot of grease, be sure to strain it before proceeding to the next step.

Once brown, add in 2 1/2 Tablespoons&#32;chili powder, 1 teaspoon&#32;sugar, 1/2 teaspoon&#32;cumin, 1 teaspoon&#32;Worcestershire sauce, 3 Tablespoons&#32;tomato paste, 1 cup&#32;beef broth, 3 Tablespoons&#32;corn meal, and 1/2 Tablespoon&#32;kosher salt.

Give it all a good stir to combine then reduce heat and simmer for about 15 minutes.

Do a taste test at this point to see if it has enough salt.

I made this for a camping trip, was a huge hit will definitely make again.  The only thing I did not add was the corn meal.  Once this sits over night and you reheat, to me is a great consistency (not to thin/thick).  Thank you!

So I made a few changes due to “what I had on hand” not sure how I ran out of corn meal but..I subbed jiffy corn muffin mix and added a tsp of garlic powder just because I’m a garlic girl and will almost always incorporate some in fresh or powder. It was so good!! This is definitely a keeper! Everyone loved it!

Absolutely delicious coney chili! Very flavorful but also balanced. It seemed like a lot of garlic and cumin, but it all blended nicely. I made 4 lbs for a party for the coney dogs and everyone raved about it with a couple of them asking for the recipe. I used the leftovers the next day to top baked potatoes and added onions, cheese, fresh diced tomatoes, and sour cream (topped with Sriracha for some heat). This recipe is spot on.  Add some cayenne if you like a little heat.  Smoked paprika if you like a more rustic flavor.
