Mom's Old Fashioned Vegetable Beef Soup

Have everyone thinking you spent a long time peeling, boiling, mashing, and mixing potatoes, when really didn&#039;t! Learn how to make instant potatoes taste better: rich, creamy and full of flavor.

How to Make Instant Potatoes Taste Better

In a medium saucepan bring the milk and broth to a gentle boil and stir continuously while the mixture boils for two minutes.

Remove the liquids from heat and pour into a large mixing bowl.

Add potato flakes and stir well with a whisk to make sure all flakes are moistened. Let sit for five minutes.

Use a hand mixer to mix and fluff potatoes on medium speed for one minute.

Add remaining ingredients and mix on medium to medium high until all ingredients are well combined. You can have small lumps, but should not have very many.They should be slightly fluffy and smooth.

Garnish with parsley, bacon, cheese, gravy...whatever you choose!

This old fashioned slaw recipe is one your family will love. It keeps for a quite some time in the refrigerator so you can make it in advance. Super easy to make and refreshing on a hot day.

Ice Box Coleslaw

cabbage

purple onion (chopped (can use regular onion))

green pepper (chopped)

carrot (chopped)

celery seeds

white granulated sugar

white vinegar

oil (I use Canola)

dry mustard

Combine cabbage, onion, green pepper, carrot, celery seeds, salt and pepper in a large bowl.  Set aside.  Combine sugar, vinegar, oil and dry mustard in a saucepan and bring to a boil on top of the stove. Remove and let cool.  Toss dressing with slaw mixture.  Refrigerate several hours or overnight.  Makes 7 to 8 cups coleslaw. Keeps up to a week refrigerated.

Homemade Custard Pie

eggs ((slightly beaten))

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Scald the milk in the microwave, heating it until just before boiling (to 180 degrees). * You can also scald the milk in a saucepan on the stove.

Whisk together the eggs, sugar, salt and vanilla.

Take 1 cup of scalded milk and drizzle it into the egg mixture, whisking quickly and constantly. Once you’ve drizzled in the first cup, then slowly drizzle in the rest of the milk, whisking the entire time.

Line a 9” pie plate with your favorite pastry crust.

*To avoid a soggy crust, brush the bottom bottom of the unbaked pie crust with egg whites. This forms a barrier and helps keep the crust from getting too soggy.*

Pour the custard mixture into the prepared pie plate.

Sprinkle the top of the custard with nutmeg.

Bake the pie for 30-35 minutes.  The pie will seem “jiggly”, but a knife inserted into the center of the pie should come out clean.

Allow the pie to cool, then store the pie in the refrigerator.

Top with freshly whipped cream and a sprinkling of nutmeg, if desired.

Add water, bitters and sugar to rocks glass. Stir to dissolve sugar.

Add bourbon or rye.

Add ice or drink straight (no ice).

Using a Cocktail smoker (an old fashioned smoker top such as Foghat), a smoking gun or smoking tube), fill and cover glass with smoke. Allow smoke to remain in covered glass for 1-2 minutes (depending on desired smokiness). All smoke to release and enjoy.

Old Fashioned

2¼ oz bourbon (67 milliliters)

orange peel

bitters

sugar cube

Cut a one inch circle of orange peel.

Place a sugar cube in glass and saturate with bitters.

Muddle the sugar cube and then add 1½ oz of bourbon.

Add ice and stir well.&nbsp;

Using a match or lighter warm the orange peel up, then squeeze while holding at a 45 degree angle over glass. Wipe peel on rim of glass and drop in.&nbsp;

Add a cherry (optional), and ¾ oz of bourbon and give a final stir. You may add a small spritz of soda if you desire. Garnish with a strip of orange peel and enjoy!

My ALL TIME favorite drink is an old fashioned cocktail. It’s the alcoholic equivalent to pizza!  When it’s done right it’s amazing! When it’s done poorly, it’s not all that bad, either. I however have no patience for a mediocre cocktail so you know this wil be done the RIGHT way! A flamed orange peel, bitters on a sugar cube, bourbon and as a personal touch, a very nice cherry to add a bit of sweetness to the delicious drink.

In a stock pot or dutch oven, cook the bacon and onion over medium heat until the bacon is cooked through and the onions are tender.

Add the chicken broth, scraping the bottom to release any stuck on bits.

Place the chopped cabbage into the pot and season with salt and black pepper as desired. (Optional: If you like vinegar in your cabbage, this is where you could add it in.)
