What kind of cheese belongs on a cheeseteak?

Really like this recipe, as it can be about the hoagie that makes it a great sandwich.  In making it for a group I used a local garlic bread that was sliced lengthwise, toasted it, filled the whole loaf with meat onions peppers and cheese and cut it in 3 inch pieces.

So this is the 4th time we’ve made this recipe as a family in the past month. My 17 year old keeps wonderin when we’re having Phillys again. This is a great recipe. We even got some extra Christmas rib eye roast and cut some of it up to make special christmas phillys.

Looks delicious! Just drop the Philly.  This is not a Philly cheesesteak.

This sandwich looks good but I wouldn't call it a philly cheese steak. Philly cheese steaks have thinly sliced rib eye - not strips. It's all about how the meat is sliced. Also, the cheese is mixed in with the meat - not just thrown on top.

Easy and Delicious ! We used chicken and it was still FIRE. The hoagie is also essential to completing the experience. Great recipe

Philly Cheesesteak is the king of all steak sandwiches.  They are not hard to make at home, as long as you follow a few simple rules.  But sure to use thinly sliced ribeye, good-quality Provolone cheese, chewy Italian rolls, and caramelized onions.   You won&#039;t believe how good you can make this classic sandwich at home.

Philly Cheesesteak

unsalted butter (softened)

vegetable oil (divided)

onion (roughly chopped)

lb ribeye (thinly sliced)

½ tsp black pepper (freshly ground)

Provolone cheese

Slice the buns with a serrated knife, lengthwise, without cutting them completely apart.  Butter the insides of the buns with about 1 tbsp (each) of the softened butter.

Heat your griddle or skillet over medium-high heat.  Place the buns on the griddle/skillet, cut side down, and cook until toasted and lightly browned, about 3 minutes.  Use a spatula to pick them up and set them aside.

Add 2 tbsp of the oil to the griddle/skillet and heat until shimmering.  Add the onions and sauté, stirring frequently, until very soft and starting to turn brown and caramelize, about 10 to 15 minutes.  Use a spatula and spoon to transfer to a bowl.

Add another 1 tablespoon of oil to the hot griddle/skillet.  Add the sliced meat evenly across the surface.  Don&#039;t bother them for a minute or so.  Then, start to gently stir them around, and cook until almost no longer pink.  Add the salt and pepper and stir to combine.

Stir in the caramelized onions and cook for about another minute.   Separate the meat/onion mixture into 4 mounds that are roughly the length of the bun.  Place 3 slices of cheese over each mound, overlapping them.  Wait a couple of minutes until the cheese melts.

Place the buns, toasted side down, on top of the melty cheese.  Use a large spatula (or two) to scoop the meat and cheese mixture into the toasted bun.   Spoon in any loose meat into the sandwiches.  Serve at once.

These delicious Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches have the perfect combination of thin juicy beef, sautéed onions, and melty cheese on a delicious toasted hoagie roll. It&#39;s an iconic American comfort food that is perfect for weeknight dinners and game nights!

Philly Cheesesteak Recipe

ribeye steak, (trimmed and sliced very thin)

coarse Kosher salt, (or to taste)

black pepper, (or to taste)

yellow onion, (chopped)

Tablespoons vegetable oil or canola oil, (divided)

hoagie rolls, (sliced 3/4 way through)

Tablespoons salted butter, (softened)

garlic clove, (finely minced)

mayonnaise

Freeze steak for 30 minutes so it is firm enough to be sliced into very thin strips using a sharp knife. Trim away any excess fat before slicing and be sure to slice as thin as you possibly can. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.

Chop onions and set aside. Carefully split the hoagie rolls lengthwise approximately 3/4 of the way through with a serrated knife.

Combine softened butter and minced garlic in a bowl, mixing well. Spread the cut sides of the hoagie rolls with the garlic butter and toast on a griddle or skillet over medium heat until toasty and golden brown. Set aside.

Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Saute onions for 8-10 minutes until they begin to caramelize slightly. Transfer sauteed onions to a bowl and set aside.

Increase the heat to medium-high and add remaining tablespoon of oil to the same pan. Once hot, add the thinly sliced steak in an even layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes without moving or touching the meat in the pan to get a nice sear. Then  turn the steak slices over with a large spatula to cook on the other side until done. Add the sauteed onions back to the pan with the meat and stir together.

Use the spatula to separate the meat and onions into 4 portions in the pan. Cover each portion with 2 slices of provolone cheese and turn off the heat.

Spread a thin layer of mayo on the cut sides of the toasted hoagie rolls, then place one roll over a portion of the meat, onions, and cheese. Use a spatula to help flip the meat onto the roll to finish your Philly cheesesteak. Serve immediately.

This one is just like the authentic Philly cheesesteak but made at home with simple ingredients and served on a toasted hoagie roll.

Saute the veggies. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and green bell peppers, season with ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper, and sauté until they are soft and caramelized. Transfer the veggies to a bowl and set aside.

Cook the meat. To the same skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Turn the heat to medium-high, add the steak, season with the remaining salt and pepper, and saute until you see barely any pink in the ribeye. Be careful not to overcook the beef. Turn off the heat and stir the sauteed veggies into the meat.

Toast the rolls. Brush the melted butter over the inside of the hoagie rolls and place them on a baking sheet, spread open (buttered side up). Place the buns under the broiler for 2 minutes.

Heat up the cheese whiz. Measure the cheese whiz into a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until it’s almost liquid-y and pourable.

Assemble. Divide the cooked steak mixture between the rolls and drizzle a generous amount of warm cheese whiz over the top.

In a large skillet, add the minced garlic on medium heat and cook until fragrant; 1-2 minutes.

Add the sliced mushrooms and Beyond Steak Tips. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring as the frozen meat cooks into the mushrooms.

Now, add the soy sauce, vegan Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper.

In a separate skillet, on medium heat, add the sliced onions, red bell peppers, and jalapeno slices.

Preheat an oven to 400 degrees.

Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

These Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls combine the classic flavors of a Philly cheesesteak with a crispy egg roll wrapper. Packed with tender beef, sautéed onions, peppers, and melted cheese, these are a must-have for any party or snack craving.

Thinly shave partially frozen beef, using a mandoline slicer. You can use a sharp knife but a meat slicer makes incredibly thin steak shavings!

Add the beef marinade to the shavings and let it sit for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat the griddle over high heat and dice the onions.

Sautee the onions in 1 Tbsp of oil just until it chars (1 minute.) I like to leave little bits of onion white for some texture. Remove onions with a long grill spatula and set aside.

toast bread

Slice the bread rolls 3/4 through and place face down onto the same hot griddle. Toast for 15-30 seconds and set toasted bread aside onto a large tray.

cook beef

Drain the beef from the marinade (do not wash) and cook in 3 Tbsp of oil over high heat until the foam evaporates and the meat is thoroughly cooked and nicely browned (about 10 minutes.)

melt cheese

Turn off the heat and arrange the beef into 6 portions. Top with cheese and allow it to sit until the cheeses melt (1-2 minutes.) This can be done in batches on a low setting if needed.

assemble

Scoop Philly cheesesteaks into the toasted bread rolls and top with the onions. Serve with ketchup or horseradish sauce.

How To Make Philly Cheesesteak:

I love this marinade.  After trying this recipe out, I threw out my old one.  This a now a family favorite!

These were so easy to make and so good!  Will be making again (and again!).

Extremely salty. Meat was super tender though. Maybe I’ll try again and omit the salt and just use the onion salt. I made sliders with this. Only complaint was the saltiness.
