Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes

lbs Russet Potatoes peeled and sliced in 1/8 inch rounds

lbs Yukon Gold Potatoes peeled and sliced in 1/8 inch rounds

onion

butter

garlic

all purpose flour

onion powder

smoked paprika

parsley

sea salt

black pepper

chicken broth

2% milk

sharp cheddar (reserve 1/2 cup for top)

freshly grated white cheddar (reserve 1/4 cup for top)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Spray 9&#215;13 inch casserole with olive oil or nonstick cooking spray.

In large skillet over medium low melt butter. Add minced garlic and saute for 1 minute;  stirring constantly. Slowly whisk in flour; cook for 3 to 4 minutes whisking constantly.  Whisk in onion powder, paprika, dried parsley, salt and freshly ground black pepper.  Slowly whisk in chicken broth and milk; alternating between the two.  Whisk until smooth; simmer for 5 minutes. Turn heat to low and slowly whisk in 1/2 cups sharp cheddar and 3/4 cup white cheddar.  Simmer while you layer the potatoes.

Layer 1/2 of the potatoes and 1/2 of the onions in the casserole dish.  Pour 1/2 of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.  Layer the rest of the potatoes and onions and and pour the rest of the cheese sauce over. Top with the remaining reserved cheese. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.  Uncover and bake for another 30 minutes or until it is nicely browned on the top and bubbly.

Scalloped Potatoes And Ham

3-4 Large Russet Potatoes

Tb Crushed Garlic

Cup Whole Milk

Cup Heavy Cream

Cup Sharp Cheddar Cheese *Divided

tsp Lawrys Seasoned Salt

Pepper

Tbs Butter

Tbs Corn Starch

Scalloped Potatoes and Ham

Wash and Peel your potatoes

Slice Potatoes into 1/4 inch thick rounds and place in a bowl

Toss them with Garlic and set aside

In a saucepan set to medium heat, melt butter

In a separate bowl mix Cornstarch with 1/4 cup milk and stir

Add remaining whole milk and cream to melted butter and stir

Whisk cornstarch slurry into mixture and continue to stir over medium heat until thickened.

Add 1 cup of cheese and stir

Your sauce will continue thicken

Once the cheese has been completely added and your sauce is nice and thick, remove from heat.

Mix sauce with slice potatoes and cubed ham and stir

Place potatoes into a springform pan or a 2 tier pan

add 1 cup of water to your Pressure Cooker / Instant Pot

Place pan on trivet

Set to Manual High Pressure for 25 minutes with a 5 minute natural release

Sprinkle your remaining cheese over the top and place under the crisp lid at 350 degrees for 2 minutes. You can also choose to put it in your oven under broil for 1-2 minutes. Just watch it closely as the cheese melts quickly.

Loaded Scalloped Potatoes

tbsp extra virgin olive oil

onions (medium, thinly sliced)

bacon

unsalted butter

tbsp all purpose flour

milk

lbs potatoes (thinly sliced (use Yukon or russet))

Preheat oven to 350F. Lightly grease a 9x13 or deep 9x9 baking dish with butter and set aside.

Add olive oil to a medium skillet and heat over medium heat. Add thinly sliced onion and salt and pepper, to taste. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until onions become caramel in color. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Wipe skillet clean and cook bacon until crisp. You can alternatively bake the bacon while the onions are cooking, saving a little time. Remove bacon from skillet, drain grease, and wipe clean again.

Melt butter over medium heat. Sprinkle flour on top of butter and whisk to form a roux. Cook for 2 minutes.

Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly. Bring roux to a simmer and let thicken just slightly, about 2 to 3 minutes after coming to a simmer. Remove from heat and set aside.

Layer half of the potatoes, half of the caramelized onions, half the bacon, half the cheese, and half the sauce, in that order in the prepared baking dish. Repeat.

Cover baking dish with foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove foil and bak an additional 30 minutes or until potatoes are easily pierced with a fork. Remove from oven and let cool 10 minutes before serving.

Made this tonight. Quite delicious. Will definitely make it again in the future. I used quite a large baking dish and so only had three layers. It only needed about an hour of baking time to be done.

I have finally found my “go-to” recipe for scalloped potatoes. I changed the dairy to 2% milk because I wanted less fat content. I changed the heat to 375, still cooked them for 1 hour and 15 minutes, but they were probably cooked at 1 hour. I added grated Parmesan cheese between the layers. This recipe was fantastic, my guests took some home in a care package.  Thank you for this recipe!

I’ve made this a few times and it’s a hit every time. I used more garlic and I have Celiac so I subbed the AP flour and chicken stock with Gluten-Free AP flour and Gluten-Free chicken stock for the same result. Line your oven with foil if you are anywhere close to the top of the pan with your ingredients. It WILL boil over and you’re gonna have a bad time. It looks like a mess when you take it out of the oven, but it all comes together in the 15 minutes of cooling time.

Super yummy. The recipe does not even include the flour. Completely forgot it, but eventually found the flour in the corner waiting to be used. Also I used around 2 1/2 cups of cheese, because 1 cup just was not enough.  Otherwise, a thumbs up dish.

I omitted the bacon and cheese, instead just sprinkled some grated Parmesan for the last 15 min. Also added v thinly sliced onion between layers. Glad I read the reviews - used a glass dish and reduced heat by 25 degrees per the comments, and also used a paper towel to dab away some grease at the end. This was EXCELLENT!! Made this over the weekend.  I used half sharp cheddar and half pepper jack cheese.  Everyone loved it.

This recipe kick major a..  we ate every bite. I added fresh lump blue crab meat to it. Use less bacon and cook all bacon fat till crisp. Use a low fat cheese also will help prevent to much oil in the end.

Super delicious! Needed to lay a paper towel on the top at the end. There was a lot of grease. All my guests enjoyed it and asked for the recipe.  Will definitely be making this again!

Scalloped Potatoes

garlic (minced)

all-purpose flour

vegetable broth (or chicken broth)

½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese* (6 ounces)

Parmesan cheese

Yukon gold potatoes (or peeled Russet potatoes, sliced ⅛-inch thick)

sweet yellow onion

thyme (optional, for serving)

Preheat oven to 375° F. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the garlic and flour and cook, stirring, for 30 seconds.

Whisk in the milk, broth, salt and pepper and heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture just barely comes to a simmer. Then remove the pan from the heat and stir in the shredded cheddar and grated Parmesan cheese.

Lay half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer in the baking dish, so that the slices overlap (it doesn&#39;t have to be perfect). Lay all of the sliced onions evenly over the top of the potatoes. Pour half of the cheese sauce evenly over. Then layer the remaining potatoes and pour the remaining cheese sauce evenly over the top.

Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Then uncover and bake for 35-45 minutes more, until potatoes are tender and the casserole is golden brown on top. Let casserole rest for 5 minutes. Then sprinkle on fresh thyme or rosemary, if desired, and serve.

Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

potatoes, (about 3 pounds peeled and sliced really thin)

onion, (diced)

garlic, (minced)

flour

thyme

salt and pepper, (to taste)

cheddar cheese, (grated)

thyme (for garnish)

Spray a 9x13 pan with nonstick spray. Preheat oven to 350°F.

Wash, dry and peel the potatoes. Using a mandolin slice the potatoes very thin (⅛-inch thick).

In a large saucepan over medium low heat melt the butter. Add the onion and garlic and cook until the onions and garlic are soft.

Add the flour and cook 2 minutes longer.

Reduce the heat to low and slowly pour in the chicken broth whisking the whole time. Next add the milk and continue whisking. Increase the heat to medium and stir constantly until the mixture comes to a boil and thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Remove from heat and stir in the ½ teaspoon of thyme and the cheddar cheese until the cheese melts.

Place half of the sliced potatoes in a layer in the bottom of the 9x13 prepared pan. Season with salt and pepper. Pour half of the sauce over the top of the potatoes.

Next add the second layer of sliced potatoes. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the remaining sauce over the top. Sprinkle with fresh thyme.

Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake another 30 minutes.

Remove from oven. Garnish with fresh thyme. Let the dish sit for about 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

Bake for 1 hour uncovered. Check after 30-40 minutes to ensure the top isn&#39;t getting too brown. If it is, cover with foil for remaining baking time.

This came up in my news feed from Google because I was searching for a scalloped potato recipe a few days before.  This is extremely simple to put together...the most involved part being peeling and slicing the potatoes.

I halved the recipe as it is just my mom and I.  I still think there was plenty to serve four given that this is somewhat of a rich recipe.    I made it gluten free by using a gluten free sub for the flour and I cut the butter in half and subbed avocado oil.  The flour did not thicken into a paste when added to the butter/oil.  However when the milk was added it thickened just like it was supposed to.  That sauce itself was pretty good!  Everything layered well and baked beautifully.  The onions were an excellent addition to this.  I had not seen a scalloped potato recipe with them in it before. Do keep an eye on the browning as it tends to sneak up on you.

This recipe was a hit with my mom proclaiming "You can give me more of that!"  And I agree.  She also suggested adding ham as someone else had.  I thing subbing other cheeses such as gruyere or Swiss would be a nice variation every once in a while.

Preheat your oven to 350˚F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Set it aside for later use.

In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion becomes soft and translucent, about 3 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, ensuring it’s well combined.
