This recipe for Sourdough French Toast is perfect for using up any leftover, stale sourdough. You can make this for breakfast or dessert, it&#x27;s up to you!

Sourdough French Toast

ml milk (1/2 a cup) (full-fat)

tbsp double cream/heavy cream

tsp vanilla extract

cinnamon

nutmeg

g butter (2 tbsp) (more if you need it)

Maple Syrup

Berries of your choice (we love blueberries and strawberries with this.)

tsp Icing sugar/powdered/ confectioner's sugar (optional)

Butter (optional)

Preheat the oven to 90C/195F. Have a baking tray ready.

Add the milk, eggs, spice and cream to a large jug, Using a balloon whisk, whisk everything together. Pour the egg mixture into a casserole dish.

Slice the sourdough into thick slices. Roughly 2.5cm/1 inch thick.Depending on the size of your casserole dish and the size of your bread, place 2 or 4 slices of bread into the egg mixture. Leave the bread to soak up the egg mixture for about 3 minutes then flip it and leave the other side to soak for another 3 minutes.While the bread is soaking heat the butter in a skillet or non-stick pan.

Once the butter is melted add 2 slices of the soaked bread to the pan. Leave to cook until the bottom is golden, about 2 minutes. Flip the bread and cook the other side until it is golden also, it may need another 2 minutes. If the bread is getting too dark turn down the heat.

Transfer the toast to the tray in the oven to keep warm. Cook the remaining bread, repeating soaking and cooking for each slice.

Serve warm with maple syrup, butter, berries and a little dusting of icing sugar/ confectioners sugar.

Preheat oven to 195ºF (95º Celsius). Have a baking tray ready.

Whisk together eggs, whole milk, brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon and salt. There’s no need to incorporate air, simply make sure that there are no streaks of egg.

Pour the egg mixture into a shallow pan that will snuggly fit all the bread in one layer.

Add the bread into the egg mixture and turn over until the bread has absorbed all the liquid.

While the bread is soaking, heat a non-stick pan or skillet (hopefully one that holds two slices comfortably) on medium low.

Add ½  of the butter and allow to foam up and almost brown then slide in two soaked slices of bread.

Cook for about 3 minutes. After a minute or so check underneath that it is not browning too quickly.

Flip the bread slices over and cook on the other side for 2 more minutes. Again, pay attention to the heat and adjust accordingly - if the french toast is cooking too quickly, reduce the heat; if it’s cooking too slowly, increase the heat.

Once done, transfer the french toast to the baking tray and into the oven to keep warm while you cook the remaining bread.

Wipe out the pan with some kitchen paper, then add remaining butter and repeat heating the butter and cooking the french toast.

Serve warm with butter, maple syrup, and fruit - or your choice of toppings.

In a shallow bowl, add the milk, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Whisk together, and set aside.

Heat butter in a pan over medium-high heat until melted.

Dip the slices of bread into the batter until coated (do NOT soak them), and place in the pan. Pan Fry for 3 to 5 minutes until it is crispy on the outside, then turn over and pan-fry on the other side for another 3 to 5 minutes.

Add more butter as needed and continue to cook the extra slices.

Serve topped with maple syrup and fresh fruit.

This is probably my favorite French toast that I have ever had. For real it is so delicious and I will totally make it again.

Legit so much better than typical french toast.

Thick slices of sourdough bread, coated in a cinnamon flavored egg wash and served with butter and maple syrup.

sourdough bread (3/4" thick)

vegetable oil

heavy cream

fine sea salt

Preheat oven to 400° and place a baking sheet inside. Heat skillet over medium-low heat with the butter and oil.

Use a whisk to combine the eggs, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a bowl. Pour the custard mixture into a shallow baking dish. Soak 2 slices of bread 10 minutes on each side.

Cook the slices on the 3-4 minutes per side. (Place the next 2 slices in the custard to soak while the current slices are cooking.) Transfer to the oven on the baking sheet to keep them warm until you are ready to serve.

I have made sourdough French toast and love it.  instead of oil I use ghee. it doesn't burn or smoke and the flavor is great.

I actually made French Toast this morning with Honey Oat Sourdough. It was excellent!

I used my left over egg nog and it rocked!

Oh my gosh - this was was delicious and perfect. I haven’t made French toast before, but you would think I make it every day, at a restaurant, based on how it turned out.

Only one change - I didn’t  have cream, so I used 1% milk instead. 

I told my husband, if we ever run a bed and breakfast, this will be a signature breakfast option. 😀
