These delicious black bean &amp; tofu burgers are spiced with garam masala, which adds a wonderful depth of flavor. Super easy to make, with a crispy texture on the outside and a melt in the mouth middle, these are perfect for vegetarians, vegans and omnivores!

Indian Spiced Black Bean & Tofu Burgers

soft silken tofu (I prefer Mori-nu brand)

panko bread crumbs

mayonnaise (or soy mayonnaise)

arugula

goat cheese (or soy cheese)

Roughly chop the onion and bell pepper (it makes it easier for the food processor). In a food processor, add the first 6 ingredients. Pulse until the mixture becomes finely minced.

Drain the tofu and pat dry. With a large spoon, mix the tofu and the panko bread crumbs into the patty mixture. You can taste the mixture and add additional garam masala seasoning or salt, if needed. Refrigerate the patty mixture for at least 20 minutes (or up to overnight).

The mixture should be moist, but just firm enough to hold a patty shape - if it is too wet, mix in 1/4 additional bread crumbs. Shape the mixture into 6-8 patties.

When ready to cook, heat a frying pan over medium heat and swirl in the cooking oil. When hot, carefully add as many patties that can fit without touching. Fry each side until it is golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Assemble the patties onto each bun with mayonnaise, arugula and cheese.

Tofu Burger

Firm Tofu ((450 grams))

Tbsp Soy Sauce

Tbsp Maple Syrup

Tbsp Peanut Butter

tsp Garlic Powder

Cremini Mushrooms ((480 grams))

Canned Coconut Cream ((240 milliliters) Unsweetened)

tsp Cornstarch

Pickles

Put the tofu on to press for 20 minutes. Either use a tofu press or place the tofu on a plate with another plate on top of it and then place something heavy on top like a heavy pot.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

When pressed, cut the tofu into four square burgers.

Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Place the tofu burgers evenly on the parchment paper and bake in the oven for 30 minutes, turning the tofu over after 15 minutes.

Mix up the marinade sauce by adding soy sauce, maple syrup, peanut butter and garlic powder to a bowl and whisking together.

When the burgers have finished baking, brush marinade sauce generously onto both sides of the burgers and leave them to marinate for 5 minutes.

Heat up a pan with a little oil and when hot, add the tofu burgers to the pan and fry on each side until golden.

Brush on more marinade sauce while the tofu is frying. The tofu burgers are ready to serve.

Mushroom sauce: Add sliced mushrooms and soy sauce to a skillet, cover with a lid and turn the heat to medium high.

When the mushrooms have released their water and are bubbling away remove the lid and let the excess water cook off.

When the water is mostly evaporated, pour in the coconut cream and bring to a simmer.

Make a cornstarch slurry by mixing the cornstarch with a little coconut cream or water until smooth.

Pour it into the sauce and mix it in. Keep stirring until the sauce thickens.

Prepare your hamburger buns, adding lettuce, sliced tomato and pickles.

Add the tofu burger, top it with mushroom sauce and serve.

Press the water out of your tofu using a tofu press or just laying a heavy pan on top of it for 20-30 minutes.

Spicy Tofu Burgers Step 2

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Fry the burgers in a skillet with a little bit of olive oil first to get the outsides nice and browned. Then transfer to the oven and bake for 20-or-so minutes, until the burgers are firm to the touch on the outside. (You can throw some peppers or onions in the pan with the burgers if you want to cook them up at the same time.)

Serve on toasted buns with sriracha, mayo, and fresh veggies and herbs (bonus points if you make quick pickled veggies because YUMMM).

Hey Lindsay,
               One of the equipments you have mentioned is the tofu press which I unfortunately don't have. I was thinking along the lines of crumbling th tofu and then adding salt to it to remove the excess of water. Would it work?

These were soooooo good. I didn’t have lemongrass paste so I tried some lemon zest and it was great. All the fresh herbs + sriracha (I added 3 tbsp because yes please) made them so flavorful that even my carnivore husband was in love. Thank you!

Easy, delicious, great texture. I just wish I added the full 2 tbsp of mint.  I was worried it would be to over powering, but the spice and the cool mint is amazing together!   highly recommend trying this out

For all the people who don’t have lemongrass paste: just toss a stalk of lemongrass (you can find lemongrass at any Asian grocery store and even some regular ones), 1 shallot, 2 tsp olive oil, 5 garlic cloves, and 2in piece of ginger into a food processor! You can also add a pinch of tumeric or some chilis in to add a bit more flavor. That’ll make a nice lemongrass paste that can flavor these burgers, soups, stews, etc. Enjoy!

Ready in just 35 minutes, this juicy tofu burger is full of smoky flavors that taste just like something you would find in a Whopper, but without the meat! The secret is minced frozen tofu. Add some fresh veggies and condiments to top it off, and you will have a protein-packed burger so good you will be craving another one!

Meaty Tofu Burger (Whopper Style)

Tbsp Corn starch

½ Onion

Garlic

Worcestershire sauce

½ tsp Sweet smoked paprika powder ()

Take a frying pan or skillet and preheat to medium heat. Add 1 Tbsp of olive oil and finely chopped onion and garlic. Cook on medium-low heat until tender, opaque, and yellow but not caramelized.

Add onion and garlic with the remaining oil to a bowl and blend it with an immersion blender.

Making onion-garlic puree

For the best result, use frozen tofu. Thaw it overnight, then squeeze it hard. Use your hand or a milk bag. You will have a sponge-like texture at the end.

Use a food processor to chop the tofu into smaller crumble-like pieces.

Preparing tofu

Take a large mixing bowl and add tofu crumbles, breadcrumbs, dairy-free milk, cornstarch, onion and garlic paste, 1 Tbsp olive oil, smoked sweet paprika, cumin, mustard powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and nutritional yeast. Mix everything well with a spatula or with your hands.

Form patties with your hands. Rolling and pressing.

Making tofu burger patties

Take a frying pan and heat it on medium heat. Add a bit of coconut or olive oil if you don&#39;t have a non-stick pan. Fry them for a couple of minutes on each side to give them a nice brown color.

Cut and grill the burger buns in a pan to give them a charcoal finish.

Add one or two tofu burger patties in between vegan cheese slices.

Then add several slices of sweet pickled cucumbers and apply a generous drizzle of ketchup.

Add raw onion, tomato slices, and ruffled lettuce leaves.

Spread some vegan mayo on top. Finish it off with the top burger bun. Enjoy!

Chicken Fried Tofu Sandwiches are the ultimate vegan delight. Crispy, pan-fried tofu, spicy mayo, and a simple slaw piled high on a toasted bun.

Chicken Fried Tofu Sandwiches

extra-firm tofu

soy sauce

all-purpose flour

Tbsp. corn starch

paprika

black pepper

garlic powder (divided)

onion powder

Vegetable oil

cabbage

scallions

Tbsp. rice vinegar

mayonnaise (sub vegan mayo)

Sriracha

lemon juice

buns (toasted)

Slice tofu width-wise into 4 even slabs and place in a dry towel. Fold towel over tofu and press firmly to remove excess moisture.

Combine milk and 2 Tbsp. soy sauce in a small square baking dish. Place tofu in soy mixture and let sit 10 minutes, flipping occasionally.

In a separate baking dish or wide-rimmed bowl, combine flour, corn starch, paprika, black pepper, 1/2 tsp. garlic powder, salt, and onion powder.

Heat 1/2 inch of oil in a large high-sided skillet (preferably cast iron) over medium-high until temperature registers 350° F. Dip the tofu in the flour mixture, turning to coat, dip back in the soy marinade, then re-dip in the flour to thoroughly coat. Carefully lay tofu into hot oil and cook, turning occasionally, until crust is crispy and golden, about 5 to 7 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine cabbage, scallions, rice vinegar, and remaining 2 tsp. soy sauce; toss to combine.

In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, Sriracha, lemon juice, and remaining 1/4 tsp. garlic powder. Spread a thin layer on the tops and bottoms of each bun.

Place one fried tofu patty on the bottom of each bun and top evenly with slaw.

Crispy BBQ Tofu Sandwich topped with cool, creamy cilantro cabbage slaw and avocado, that can be made in under 30 minutes. Vegan!

block tofu- organic, extra firm, drained

olive oil or coconut oil

BBQ Sauce (aim corn syrup, or make your own)

chili paste

buns, (like brioche buns) toasted

Avocado- optional, messy but good. 😉

¼ cup cilantro, chopped

red onion, thinly sliced

vegan mayo (or regular mayo) or

vinegar- Apple Cider

Drain the block of tofu, pat dry, and cut into one-inch-thick slabs. Trim if needed to fit the bun. You can get 2, maybe 3 out of one block. Pat dry again.

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil, and sprinkle the salt and pepper over the oil. Once the pepper is fragrant, carefully add the tofu. Sear until crispy and deeply golden- do not move it around in the pan, let it develop a crust, so it will release itself. Lower heat if splattering- this will take about 12 minutes.

Mix the BBQ sauce and red chili paste in a small bowl and set aside.

Place the shredded cabbage in a medium bowl, add onions and cilantro, mayo, vinegar, and salt, and toss to combine well. Taste. It should be creamy, tangy and flavorful. Feel free to add more vinegar, salt or mayo to attain this. All mayos are different!

Once the tofu is nice and crispy, lower the heat to low, and add the bbq sauce mixture, coating the tofu well. I use all the sauce. Let it caramelize just slightly in the pan, and turn the heat off.

Assemble the Sandwich

Spread more mayo on the bottom bun if you like, add the hot tofu, and top with cool slaw and a few slices of avocado.

This burger was DELICIOUS and so quick to whip up! I kept thinking what a great crowd-pleaser this would be at a party. Thank you for all the amazing recipes and keeping my partner and I fed!

Made this for dinner at my husband’s request and boy did he LOVE it! We do a little trick with the tofu and freeze it before cooking it. It makes a huge difference in the texture it has the texture of chicken and tastes very close to chicken when you fry it such as this recipe. We will definitely make this again.

Outstanding!! Made this for my husbands birthday dinner and it was a huge hit. Followed the recipe exactly. Didn’t change a thing and it was perfect.

Yum! Loved this. I seared about 7 min per side- I was afraid it would burn, but didn’t. I cut my block into thirds.  Might add extra bbbq sauce to each side of the bun next time. This is a keeper!

All I could taste was apple cider vinegar. It overpowered the bbq sauce and the slaw. Such a waste to throw everything away these days when everything is so expensive. After spending all afternoon prepping everything and then cooking, I ended up making myself a pbj sandwich for dinner :( sigh…..
