With these veggie hot dogs, I’ve pureed the lentils and veggies so they have a finer and more ‘veggie dog’-like texture. The smoked paprika and garlic powder give them that classic hot dog aroma and taste, but they’re full of goodness from pulses and veggies. I’ve made them with plain flour, but gluten-free flour works well if required.

Lentil Carrot Veggie Hot Dogs Recipe

(200 grams) dried red lentils (rinsed)

(700 milliliters) vegetable stock

olive oil

onion (finely diced)

carrots (125 grams) (grated)

½ tsp smoked paprika

garlic powder

salt and pepper

(150 grams) plain (all purpose) flour

Cook the lentils in the stock for 10 minutes or until tender, then drain.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat, then add the onion and sautee for a few minutes until translucent but not browned. Add the grated carrot and sautee for 3-5 minutes until soft.

Add the cooked lentils, carrot mixture, spices, salt and pepper to a food processor and whiz until it’s thick and well combined.

Tip the mixture into a bowl and mix in 3 tablespoons of the flour. Add more flour, a tablespoon at a time, until a thick and manageable consistency. You may not need all of the flour.

Roll into hot dog-like shapes, place on a plate, cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Heat 1 tsp of the oil in a frying pan over a medium/low heat and add some of the hot dogs. Fry, gently turning often, until golden. Repeat in batches.

Serve in a hot dog bun.

Add the carrots to a small roasting pan and toss with olive oil. In a small bowl, whisk together broth, vinegar, soy sauce, maple syrup, garlic powder, paprika and liquid smoke. Pour over carrots and cover pan with foil. Let sit for 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 425°. Place the foil-covered baking dish in the oven and roast carrots for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and roast for another 20 minutes, until the carrots are just tender enough to stab with a fork.

Place carrots in hot dug buns, serve with ketchup and mustard.

½ tsp liquid smoke

Marinate: Peel carrots and trim off the ends. Combine all remaining ingredients in a large shallow dish, then submerge the carrots in the liquid to marinate. Let sit for 30 minutes, flipping the carrots occasionally if they&#x27;re not completely submerged.

Boil: Transfer carrots and marinade to a large pot. If marinade does not cover the carrots, add water until the carrots are fully submerged. Bring to a boil, cover, and let cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until carrots are cooked through. You should be able to pierce them with a fork, but they should not be so soft that they break easily.

Serve: At this point you can serve the carrots, or you can sear them on a well-greased grill (or grill plate) to char the outsides. Serve on a hot dog bun with your favorite condiments!

From Scratch Vegan Hot Dogs

masa harina, (or finely ground yellow cornmeal)

vital wheat gluten flour

arrowroot powder

olive oil, (or safflower/canola oil)

Worcestershire sauce

liquid smoke

½ teaspoon ground mace, (or nutmeg)

Process

After pressing the tofu for 30 minutes, crumble it up into a food processor (with a dough blade attachment if you have one), add everything else to it, and process until it forms a sturdy dough.

Roll

Form the dough into an 1/2-inch thick oval and portion it into 8 equal pieces. Roll the pieces into 4-inch hot dogs.

Twist

Cut eight 6×8-inch strips (or strips big enough to fit the dogs) of both parchment paper and aluminum foil. Next, wrap the hot dogs first in parchment paper strip, twist the ends in the direction you rolled, and then wrap the hot dogs in the foil strip, twisting the ends in the same direction you rolled again to create a tight seal.Tip: You can cut off a bit of the excess twisted end with scissors, to help fit in the steamer.

Steam

Add some water to a steamer, and then get it boiling. Once boiling, add the wrapped tofu dogs to the steam basket, cover with a lid, reduce the heat to a steady simmer (low-medium heat) and steam for 45 minutes, until firm to the touch.

Cool

Remove the tofu dogs from the steamer, and let them cool for 10 minutes before unwrapping. Eat right away, or save for later to grill.

Followed the recipe exactly and they are excellent.

These are delicious! We have made them several times and the corn dogs too. We lightly grilled them to reheat them and they were just what you would expect to put on a toasty hot dog bun. If I could comment on not using foil. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work as Deborah described. Maybe wrap twice in parchment - once in each direction. Maybe we will try that next time we make them.

How To Make VEGAN Hot Dogs

This easy vegan hot dog recipe is my vegetarian alternative to real hot-dogs made of seitan that taste incredibly authentic, juicy meaty and better than store bought vegan frankfurters by far! Makes 16 regular wieners or 12 jumbo size. Perfect for potluck or bbq.

Best Vegan Hot Dogs

-400 gram package extra firm tofu

water

sesame oil

bbq sauce*

tablespoon vegetarian better than bouillon no chicken soup base

yellow mustard

tamari or soy sauce

nutritional yeast

onion

garlic

coriander

celery salt

allspice

vital wheat gluten

red food colouring (optional for colour)

boiling water, from kettle

vegetarian better than bouillon no chicken soup base

To make

Drain tofu wrap in layers of paper bowl squeeze out extra moisture with your hands. Break into chunks and add to food processor with rest of ingredients EXCEPT GLUTEN and process until smooth like a puree

Now add vital wheat gluten evenly over the top and mix until just combined, it's ok if you see a bit of flour on top.

Turn seitan dough onto counter and knead 20-25 times and form into a loaf. Slice loaf into 4 pieces. Portion each piece into 3-4 sections. Tear off 12-16 pieces of tin foil approximately 6 inches wide. Roll each piece of seitan into a sausage shape roughly the same length as s hot dog bun. Wrap each wiener in the tin foil by rolling up tootsie roll style and twisting the ends.

To cook

Stack them in a steamer insert of a steamer pot. Trim the twisted ends slightly if needed to fit. Fill the base of the pot with water making sure it doesn't touch the steamer insert. Cover and steam for 30 minutes (I steam on medium heat) While they are cooking mix marinade ingredients in bowl 

When cool enough to handle unwrap them (at this point they are cooked and can be eaten) Add frankfurters to a large zip lock freezer bag with the marinade.

Squeeze out excess air, seal bag and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best flavour and texture.

To serve

Remove from marinade. Pan fry or grill with little oil or microwave them! Enjoy in a hot dog bun with your favourite toppings. Makes 12 jumbo dogs or 16 regular size.

I just made them and they are marinating right now.  Just watched the YouTube video again and noticed that in the video you added mustard to the marinade but it isn't in the written recipe.  How much did you use?

These are the best dang hot dogs I have ever made! I have been meatless for more than 25 years, and nothing compares to this recipe...I mean nothing! They are flavorful and meaty without excess chew, and all the ingredients are in my kitchen. I have made these several times (several might be an understatement), and never get tired of them! One question, I have recently been counting macros, and I do not see a nutrition section. It's probably right in front of my face, but I am failing to find one. Please let me know the nutrition or where to find it. Thank you for this recipe by the way!

It's easier than you can imagine to make your own vegan hot dogs! And they're so much healthier when you control the ingredients.

Homemade Veggie Dogs

onion (coarsely chopped)

pinto beans (well-drained)

coconut aminos or soy sauce

tomato paste

white or black pepper

celery seed

mace

oatmeal (rolled

Put the onion and garlic into a food processor and pulse to chop finely. Heat a small non-stick skillet. Add onion and garlic and cook until onion is softened, about 3 minutes. Transfer onion mixture back to food processor.

Add the pinto beans, water, coconut aminos or soy sauce, tomato paste, and all seasonings to the food processor. Blend until it’s a thin paste.

Combine remaining ingredients (gluten, oatmeal, yeast, and flax) in a large mixing bowl. Add the contents of the food processor and stir until combined. If it seems that there’s not enough moisture, add another tablespoon or two of water. Knead in the bowl for about two minutes until a heavy gluten “dough” is formed.

Cut off 8 pieces of aluminum foil or parchment paper, each about 6 inches long. Divide the gluten into 8 equal pieces. Place a piece of foil or parchment on the counter. Roll a piece of gluten between the palms of your hands until it’s about the size and shape of a hot dog. Place it on the foil/paper and roll up. Roll the tube back and forth, pressing lightly with your hands, to give it an even shape, and then twist the ends closed. Repeat with the remaining gluten to form 8 veggie hot dogs.

Set up a steamer in a pot and add enough water to come just below the bottom of the steamer. Begin heating the water. Place all the veggie dogs in the steamer, cover, and steam for 45 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before unwrapping. Store the veggie dogs in a covered container in the refrigerator. Warm gently in a frying pan or microwave or on a grill before serving.
