This easy, old-fashioned lemonade, made with red and blue berries, is the ultimate summer drink and 4th of July treat.

Old-Fashioned Lemonade

c. sugar

c. fresh lemon juice

Berries and fresh mint sprigs,

This copycat Melting Pot blackberry sage lemonade will have you coming back for more.

Monin Blackberry Syrup

C water

superfine sugar

lemon

Stir together water, 4 tsp. superfine sugar (add the other 2 tsp. if it needs more sweetener) and the juice of one lemon. Set aside.

Add ice to the pitcher of lemonade

Add 10 blackberries to a mortar and pestle or bowl

Chop the fresh sage finely and add it to the bowl or mortar and pestle of blackberries 

Add 1/2 chopped lemon as well

Muddle the blackberries, sage leaves and remaining half lemon that has been sliced into wedges

Add Monin Blackberry syrup and muddled berries, sage and lemon mixture to pitcher of lemonade

Stir well with a long bar spoon

Pour into glasses and garnish with more blackberries and a lemon wedge

Homemade Lemonade Recipe

water (divided)

Combine 1 cup (236ml) water and 1 cup sugar in a small saucepan. Place over medium-low heat and stir until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and set aside, allow to cool for 10 minutes.

Pour 1 cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice into a pitcher. Add sugar/water mixture (simple syrup).

Add remaining 5 cups (1180ml) water and stir well. Pour over ice and serve, or transfer to refrigerator and allow to chill several hours before serving.

This is a good measurement recipe for lemonade, but most people will find that it just doesn't have the lemon flavor they expect. For this, you need the zest from those lemons. This recipe should be amended to include the zest of the squeezed lemons. Let the zest sit in the lemon juice for 10 to 15 minutes before straining with a sieve or cheesecloth. You want to do this to keep it from becoming bitter, especially if you've got some of the pith in there with the zest.

The flavor is so good. I could make it all the time. My friends like it too.

1 cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice¹ seeds removed, pulp may remain (236ml)

¹I really recommend fresh squeezed, but my brother often makes this recipe using bottled lemon juice with success.
