Instant Pot Dal Tadka / Dal Fry with Basmati Rice Recipe

Ghee

tsp Cumin seeds (Jeera)

Green Chili Pepper (sliced into 2 pieces or chopped)

Curry Leaves (Kadi Patta)

tsp Asafoetida (Hing)

Garlic (minced)

Onion (finely chopped)

Tomato (finely chopped)

Split Pigeon Pea (Toor dal) (washed)

Water

Cilantro (to garnish)

tsp Ground Turmeric (Haldi powder)

Coriander powder (Dhaniya powder)

tsp Red Chili powder (Mirchi powder)

Salt

Basmati Rice

Start the instant pot in sauté mode and heat the oil in it. Add cumin seeds, green chili, curry leaves, garlic and asafoetida.

After the garlic turns light brown, add the chopped onions and cook for 2 minutes until the onions turn golden brown.

Add tomato and spices and cook for another 2 minutes.

Add the washed dal and water. Stir it all up.&nbsp;

Place the trivet. In a bowl, add all ingredients for basmati&nbsp; rice and place it on top of the trivet. Close the lid with vent in sealing position.&nbsp;

Change the instant pot setting to manual or pressure cook mode at high pressure for for 5 mins. After the instant pot beeps, let the pressure release naturally for 5 minutes, then release the pressure manually (5 minute NPR).&nbsp;

Using tongs, carefully take out the bowl of basmati rice. Then take out the trivet.&nbsp;

Garnish with cilantro and stir. Optionally, sprinkle the juice of half a lemon. Dal tadka is ready to be served.

How to Cook Instant Pot Lentils

Rinse lentils under cold running water and check for rocks.

Add the rinsed lentils, stock, spices and salt to the Instant Pot.

Lock the lid and set the steam valve to its “sealing” position.

Select the “MANUAL” button and cook for 10 minutes on high pressure. It will take about 15 minutes for the pressure to build, then the countdown timer will start.

When the cook time is up, turn to quick release pressure.

Season with additional salt and pepper, to taste

<p>Wondering how to cook Instant Pot lentils? Here's how to cook lentils in a pressure cooker, whether you want them straight up or seasoned for a fast dinner!</p>

In the Instant Pot, place all ingredients and give them a stir. Lock the lid and place the vent in the “Sealing” position.

Cook on high pressure for 9 minutes

Press the Pressure Cook button (making sure the “High Pressure” setting is selected) and set the time for 9 minutes. Wait while the Instant Pot cooks. (Note: It takes about 5 to 10 minutes for the pot to “preheat” and come up to pressure before it starts cooking. During cooking, avoid touching the metal part of the lid.)

Quick release: 

Vent the remaining steam from the Instant Pot by moving the pressure release handle to “Venting”, covering your hand with a towel or hot pad. Never put your hands or face near the vent when releasing steam. Open the pressure cooker lid.

Open the lid and stir; there will be some leftover broth but the lentils will soak it up as they sit and become perfectly moist. Serve warm. (Storage info: Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator; reheat on the stovetop.)

Instant Pot Lentils (in 9 minutes or less!)

Combine the lentils and water in the bottom of the Instant Pot. You can add up to 1/2 teaspoon of salt if you want them seasoned, but keep in mind that they may turn out a little more firm that way. Don&#039;t season with salt until the end of the cooking cycle if you want to guarantee soft lentils.

Secure the lid and move the steam release valve to Sealing. Press the Manual or Pressure Cook button to cook at high pressure for 9 minutes. (They will still have a little bite to them this way; cook for 10 minutes for softer lentils.) It will take 10 minutes for the pot to come to pressure before the cooking cycle begins, so the screen will just read &quot;On&quot; until then.

When the cooking cycle completes, immediately move the steam release valve to Venting to release the pressure right away. Make sure your hand isn&#039;t over the steam release valve, to avoid the hot steam touching your skin. When the floating valve in the lid drops, the pressure is released and it&#039;s safe to open the lid. (If you forget to release the pressure right away, it will still be okay-- your lentils will just be softer when you remember to go check on them.)

Stir the lentils and make sure they are tender to your liking. You can always add an extra 1/2 cup of water and pressure cook them again for 2-3 minutes, if you want them softer, but they should be done at this point. There shouldn&#039;t be too much liquid left in the pot, so you can use them right away without draining them.

Use a slotted spoon to scoop them out, then serve warm. For serving ideas, be sure to check out the post above! You can store cooked lentils in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.

Saute Onions &amp; Garlic: Add in diced onion and shallot, then saute for 3 minutes. Add in minced garlic, 1 tsp (2.7g) ground cumin, and 2 bay leaves, then saute for another minute.

Deglaze: Pour in ½ cup (125ml) unsalted stock, then deglaze by scrubbing all the flavorful brown bits off the bottom of the pot. Give it a quick mix.

Pressure Cook Lentils: Add in 2 cups (400g) green lentils, diced carrots, diced celery, 1 tbsp (15ml) regular soy sauce, and 1 tbsp (15ml) fish sauce. Pour in 3½ cups (875ml) unsalted stock, then give it a quick mix. Layer 14 oz (400g) crushed tomatoes on top of the other ingredients in Instant Pot - do not mix!With Venting Knob in Venting Position, close the lid, then turn Venting Knob to Sealing Position. Pressure Cook at High Pressure 10 minutes + Natural Release 10 minutes. Open the lid carefully.

Instant Pot Red Lentil Curry with Sweet Potatoes

Press the &quot;sauté&quot; button on the Instant Pot. Set to &quot;normal&quot; heat. Once it reads &quot;hot&quot;, add the oil. When hot, add the sweet potato, onion, and salt. Sauté for 5-6 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onion starts to brown. 

Add the minced garlic and ginger. Sauté for 1 minute, until fragrant. Stir in the spices (curry powder, cumin, coriander seed, cayenne pepper). Continue stirring for 30 seconds to prevent the spices from burning.

Drizzle in 2-3 tablespoons vegetable broth or water to deglaze the pot. Stir to remove any stuck on spices or onion.

Stir in the coconut milk, remaining vegetable broth and red lentils. Lock the lid in place and turn the pressure vent to &quot;sealing&quot;. 

Select &quot;high pressure&quot; and set the timer to 5 minutes. It will take about 10 minutes for the pot to come to pressure. Allow the pressure to release naturally after the 5 minutes are up; this will take about 10-15 minutes.
