Thick Italian Hot Chocolate

sugar

cocoa unsweetened

+ 1 tablespoon milk ((2% or whole milk/divided))

corn starch

In a small bowl whisk until smooth, 1/4 cup milk and cornstarch set aside.

Sift the cocoa into a medium bowl then add the sugar and whisk together,  set aside.

In a small/medium pot heat 3/4 cups + 1 tablespoon milk until boiling reduce heat to low, start whisking and add the milk/cornstarch mixture then add the cocoa mixture slowly while continually whisking until smooth add the chopped chocolate and whisk for approximately 3 minutes. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

Melt butter

Melt butter in a medium saucepan over low heat.

Whisk in cornstarch

Whisk in cornstarch until combined and melty. If you want the hot chocolate thicker, use the maximum amount of cornstarch.

Add milk, sugar, and bring to boil

Add in milk and sugar. Increase the heat gradually to medium-high. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Mixture will start to thicken.

Melt in chocolate chips

Once the mixture begins to thicken, turn the heat down to low and add in the chocolate chips. Stir constantly until well melted.

Serve

Serve hot. Keep the leftovers because it is also amazing, if not better cold!

Italian Hot Chocolate is so rich, thick and luxuriously creamy, it seems indulgent! My gourmet hot chocolate recipe takes 15 mins. to make!

Italian Hot Chocolate

salt

cocoa powder

chocolate

vanilla extract

Set aside 1/2 cup of the whole milk.

To a medium saucepan, over medium heat, add remaining 3 1/2 cups of milk, salt, cocoa powder, and sugar. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly.

Add the dark chocolate and stir until melted.

To the reserved ½ cup milk, add cornstarch and stir until fully dissolved.

With the chocolate mixture still simmering, whisk in the cornstarch slurry. Continue cooking, stirring constantly for 1-2 minutes, until the mixture thickens.

Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract, and serve immediately. Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Thick Italian hot chocolate recipe is not like your everyday watery hot chocolate. This is a hot cocoa recipe made Italian style. Rich, creamy and pudding-like drink that you need to try.

Pour in cold milk and whisk well to dissolve cornstarch.

Add chopped chocolate and heat it up over low heat while stirring.

Keep stirring until it is bubbly and hot and you have a chocolate thick mixture.

Pour in cups and top with whipped cream or marshmallow if desired.

So decadent!  I was looking for a hot chocolate recipe and being Italian, this caught my eye.  I had all of the ingredients and it came together quite quickly.  Wow, was this ever delicious. ✌️

This is a really good recipe. It’s definitely worth breaking out the kitchen scale to properly measure the chocolate. Once I stopped being lazy and followed the measurements, I found that this is the perfect cup of hot chocolate.

Reminds me of my aunt’s Christmas hot cocoa.  Such a special treat when we would visit her during holidays.
