This is the ultimate make at home Monte Cristo Sandwich - with turkey, ham and cheese in a sandwich that is cooked French toast style. If desired, serve with powdered sugar and raspberry jam. It’s a sweet and savory combo that will convert even a skeptic!

In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs and the milk.

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Lay 4 pieces of bread down and top with 1 slice of cheese on each piece of bread. Place 1/4 of the ham on top of each piece of cheese.

Take 4 more slices of bread and spread about 1/2 tablespoon of mayonnaise on one side. Place the mayonnaise side down on top of the ham, then spread another 1/2 tablespoon of mayonnaise on the opposite side of the bread. Repeat with the 3 remaining sandwiches.

Place 1/4 of the turkey on top of each sandwich, then top with another slice of cheese. Place the last 4 slices of bread on top of each sandwich.

Press down on each sandwich firmly to press together slightly.

Dip each sandwich quickly into the egg and milk mixture. They need to be coated, but not soaked.

Place the sandwiches in the skillet with the butter. Cook until the bread is toasted and the cheese on the side against the skillet is melted, then carefully flip the sandwich over and cook the other side.

Slice the sandwiches in half to serve, and serve dusted with powdered sugar and a side of raspberry jam for dipping, if desired.

I made these for my family during quarantine, any got rave reviews. I used Gruyere cheese and found less is more with the meats. The first one i made was a bit overstuffed, and did not press together well. It fell apart on the griddle. Just a slice or two of each meat was sufficient, and stayed together better. The sandwiches compressed nicely, and the meat didn't overpower the other succulent flavors. Great recipe! Raspberry jam topped it off. Thank you!

Putting cheese on either side of the meat ensures a beautiful melty goodness when you are done! Leave the sandwiches whole for frying, as you lose the cheesy goodness inside otherwise. Only slice them after they are cooked up!&nbsp;

Place a toothpick on each corner of the sandwich.

Dip the whole sandwich in the batter, covering the surface completely and fry in 340 degrees Fahrenheit oil until golden. The Texas toast will take longer to heat up the inside, thus the lower frying temperature. If you are using normal bread, you can go up to around 360 degrees Fahrenheit for frying.&nbsp;

Remove and drain on paper towels.&nbsp;

Remove the toothpicks and sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired. If you want the real Disney deal, dip your sandwich in raspberry jam!

all-purpose flour

In an 8x8-inch baking dish, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, water and milk, then add to the flour mixture. Whisk thoroughly until smooth and no lumps of flour remain, then set aside.

On each of 4 slices of bread, arrange one slice of ham, turkey, and swiss. Top with the remaining bread slices, then using a sharp knife, slice each sandwich in half on the diagonal.  You may wish to insert toothpicks to hold everything together until the sandwich is fried.

Heat oil over medium-high heat to between 365-375 degrees.  If the oil starts to smoke, turn the temperature down. Working carefully, dip each sandwich into the prepared batter, then lift out and allow excess batter to drip off. Gently lower the sandwich into the hot oil.  Repeat with the remaining sandwiches. Work in batches and do not crowd the pan.

Cook in the oil for about 3 minutes, then flip and cook the other side of the sandwich for another 3 minutes, until golden brown on both sides.

Gently remove each diagonal sandwich half from the hot oil using tongs and set on a paper-towel lined baking sheet. Place in a warm oven until ready to serve. Repeat the process with the remaining three sandwiches, frying each sandwich one at a time and allowing the oil temperature to come back up between each batch.

When ready to serve, dust each sandwich with powdered sugar and serve with raspberry or blackberry jam on the side.

How to Make Monte Cristo Sandwiches

French Toast meets a meaty grilled cheese sandwich in this classic brunch indulgence.This Monte Cristo Sandwich recipe is sweet and savory comfort food at its best! Great for using leftover holiday turkey or ham.

farmhouse white sandwich bread, brioche,

unsalted butter (, divided (I use European-style,

Dijon mustard

red currant jelly

Swiss cheese (or shredded Gruyere (2 ounces))

ham ((2 ounces))

turkey ((2 ounces))

kosher salt

nutmeg

confectioner's sugar (, for dusting)

Soften 1 tablespoon of butter and very lightly butter one side of two slices of the bread, and both sides of the third slice of bread. Spread Dijon mustard onto the unbuttered side of one slice of bread, and 1 teaspoon of jam or jelly onto the unbuttered side of the final slice.

Assemble sandwich in the following order: 1 ounce/slice of Swiss/Gruyere on top of the Dijon, followed by the ham, the slice of fully buttered bread, turkey, 1 ounce/slice of Swiss/Gruyere, and the remaining slice of bread, jelly side down. Trim crusts, if desired. 

Loosely wrap the sandwich with plastic wrap and weigh it down with a grill press or skillet for 3-5 minutes.

In a shallow dish, whisk together egg, milk, salt, and nutmeg. Dip sandwich into the egg mixture, until some of the liquid absorbs into the bread, but it isn't falling apart.&nbsp;

Melt together vegetable oil and remaining butter in a skillet (I like to use cast iron). Cook 3-4 minutes per side, until sandwich is golden and cheese is melted. Transfer to paper towels to drain.

Heat remaining jam or jelly in a small saucepan or microwave until warmed. Dust sandwich with confectioner's sugar, slice in half, and serve with jelly on the side.&nbsp;

honey mustard, ((optional) for dipping)

Assemble the sandwich. One slice of bread topped with turkey, cheese, bread, ham, cheese, and bread.

Assemble sandwiches on a work surface.  Start with one slice of bread, three slices of turkey, 1 slice of Swiss cheese, another slice of bread, three slices of ham, 1 slice of cheddar cheese and one final slice of bread.

Slice sandwiches diagonally and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill in refrigerator for 3 hours.

Slice the sandwich diagonally and then wrap tightly in plastic wrap and chill for 2-3 hours (up to overnight).  Chilling allows the sandwich to firm up which will help it hold together in the frying process.

After chilling the sandwiches, make the batter*.

Combine flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a large bowl combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk to combine.

In separate bowl, combine water and egg. Pour wet ingredients into dry mixture and whisk well.

Heat oil in a large pot.

Pour about 2 inches (or more) of oil into a large pot (enough to cover the sandwich) and set it over medium heat. Heat the oil to a temperature between 325°F-350°F.

Remove sandwich from refrigerator, unwrap it, and dip in batter and then fry in oil.

Working one half a sandwich at a time, remove the plastic wrap from the chilled sandwich and dip it into the batter with your hands. Then, use metal tongs to dip the sandwich into the hot oil. You may have to hold down the sandwich to submerge in oil or flip it. Fry until golden brown (4-5 minutes with homemade batter or closer to 4 minutes with pancake batter ). Remove from the oil and set on a paper towel-lined plate to drain slightly. Repeat with the remaining halves.

Sprinkle fried sandwiches with confectioners&#39; sugar and dip into raspberry preserves.

Cook: Once oil in pan is hot, add one sandwich at a time, cooking for about 3 minutes (reduce heat if it starts to brown too much on the bottom) until golden and crisp. Flip and cook on the other side until golden. Remove to a paper towel lined plate.

Serve: Cut into halves or quarters before serving, and dust with powdered sugar. Serve with a side of raspberry jam.

Place turkey and Swiss cheese on one slice of bread and ham and American cheese on another slice of bread. Place third slice in-between and secure the triple-decker sandwich in the corners with toothpicks.

Place egg in mixing bowl, add water and beat together. Add salt, sugar, flour, and baking powder. Beat batter until smooth.

Dip sandwich in batter and carefully cover all the sides and surface. Carefully place in hot oil and fry until golden. When the sandwich has turned a warm gold color remove it from the hot oil and place it on a paper towel. Let cool for a few minutes before removing the toothpicks. Before serving slice into fourths and sprinkle with powder sugar.

Serve with raspberry preserves, pickle garnish, and your favorite French fried potatoes.

Spread a layer of raspberry preserves on half of the bread slices (about a teaspoon). Then top with ham and swiss cheese. On the other bread slices, spread each one with a dollop of honey mustard (be genergous, this is brings the flavor!) . Place the bread slices with the honey mustard on top of the other slices to make a ham sandwich. Cut each sandwich diagonally from each corner to make triangles.

Place the triangle pieces in the prepared pan with the pointy ends up.

In a bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, salt, and pepper, and then pour over all the triangle pieces. Sprinkle the smoked Gouda cheese over the entire dish. Cover the pan with aluminum foil and place in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours (can chill overnight).

When you are ready to bake the dish, preheat the oven to 350, remove the cover, and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the eggs are set (no longer runny).

Cool for 5-10 minutes and dust with powdered sugar. Slice and serve with a dollop of raspberry preserves.
