In a large pot over high heat, combine the water and Thai tea leaves. Bring the tea to a boil, then immediately pour the tea through a strainer into a heat-proof vessel to remove the tea leaves. Let the tea cool to room temperature.

Make the simple syrup: in a small pot over high heat, combine the sugar and water. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved and the syrup is clear.

Assemble the tea: divide the ice between 2 glasses, then add simple syrup, tea, and half-and-half.

When we made our Thai Tea mix from the Pantai Thai Tea Mix bag, we reduced their suggested sugar amount by about 20% to our own personal taste. For those of you who prefer an organic version with coconut milk, that option is below too. In the recipe there are two options for creating your Thai Iced Tea - Option #1 Using a purchased  and Option #2 - Making it from scratch using organic black tea bags and spices.

Bring water to boil and add the thai tea mix. Add sugar and gently stir to completely dissolve sugar. Gently boil tea for about 3 minutes. Remove from heat.

Allow tea to steep for at least 30 minutes and allow it to cool. The more concentrated the tea flavor, the better the Thai tea tastes.

If you are using the Thai tea mix, strain the tea leaves. Set finished Thai tea aside to cool.

You can make this ahead of time and have the Thai tea chilling in the fridge. We usually like to make this tea mix one day ahead.

Fill glasses with ice and pour in Thai tea leaving enough room to fill in your half and half (or other creamer). For an 8 oz. glass we like to add about 2-3 tablespoons of half and half for a creamier flavor.

Thai Iced Tea - just like the restaurants

Craving bubble tea but don’t want to keep spending so much money on it? Making your own is really easy — and much more customizable. You can buy tapioca pearls or boba from Walmart or Amazon (or your local Taiwanese store) then make the tea with a blend of your favorite black tea, sweetener, and half and half or non-dairy substitute. Just add ice and a wide straw, and you can have your favorite treat anytime!

Taiwanese Bubble Tea Recipe by Tasty

In a medium pot over high heat, combine the water and tea bags. Bring to a boil, then remove the pan from the heat and let the tea cool to room temperature.

Bring a medium pot of water to boil over high heat. Once the water is boiling, add the tapioca pearls and boil until softened, about 20 minutes.

Set the strainer with the pearls over a medium bowl. Add the brown sugar to the strainer and pour the hot water over.

Stir to dissolve the brown sugar. Soak the pearls in brown sugar syrup for 30 minutes, then store the bubbles and syrup separately until ready to serve.

Assemble the tea: Divide the pearls and ice between 2 glasses, then add the brown sugar syrup, tea, and half and half.

Stir with a wide-opening straw, then serve.

This sweet and creamy Thai Tea Recipe from Scratch is a decadent chilly caffeinated drink recipe without the harmful dyes. Sip this beautiful beverage with a bold ombre orange color to cool off or cool down when eating spicy Thai foods.

Thai Tea Recipe from Scratch

Black Tea Bags

Water

Vanilla Extract (optional)

Star Anise

Whole Cardamom

Cinnamon Stick

Vanilla Bean

Ground Turmeric

Sugar (I used coconut palm sugar)

Sweetened Condensed Milk

Evaporated Milk (or whole milk)

Place the tea bags, water, vanilla extract, star anise, cardamom, cinnamon stick, vanilla bean, and turmeric into a medium-sized pot and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low and let simmer for 3 to 5 minutes.

Pour the tea mixture through a strainer to remove the whole spices. Fill two glasses with ice and pour the tea over the ice.

Thai Tea

In a small bowl whisk the sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk (or whole milk) together until smooth. Pour the mixture over the iced Thai tea. Garnish with mint leaves.

Sweetened Milk

A favorite at Thai restaurants, this Spiked Thai Iced Tea is an alcoholic version that's sweet and silky, with a subtle hint of vanilla.

Make the tea ahead of time: Boil water...

Make the tea ahead of time: Boil water and steep the tea according to package instructions. Stir in sugar until dissolved and allow tea to cool entirely in refrigerator.

Fill a glass with ice and pour in...

Fill a glass with ice and pour in vodka, then the tea until the glass is mostly full. Add a splash of milk and stir. Serve.

This Thai tea ice creamcombines delicious floral notes of Pantai Thai iced tea with the creamysweetness of iced cream. Perfect for a sweet treat in a hot summer day!

Thai Tea Ice Cream

tbsp Pantai Iced Tea Mix (tea leaves)

water (Boil - need 1/4 cup Thai tea)

heavy whipping cream

sweetened condensed milk

unsalted walnuts

tsp salt

Thai iced tea (Made from Thai Iced Tea Ingredients above.)

Combine 1/2 cup water and 2 tablespoons Pantai Iced Tea Mix

Bring to a boil. Boil for 3-4 minutes.

Strain liquid to remove Pantai Iced Tea Mix using cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer.

Refrigerate Thai iced tea until cold.

To Make Thai Iced Tea (used in Ice Cream Recipe)

In food processor, finely grind walnuts (no chunks). 

Whip heavy whipping cream until light peaks form (using hand beaters or food processor).

Add sweetened condensed milk, Thai iced tea liquid, salt and ground walnuts.

Lightly blend to stir in remaining ingredients. Do not over whip. Transfer to a freezer safe container or dish. Freeze at least 2 hours or overnight until firm.

To Make Thai Tea Ice Cream

This is the street vendor version of Thai Milk Tea or Cha Yen as it is called in Thailand. As Boba Milk Tea is almost the same we have included it here.

Thai Milk Tea (Cha Yen) and Boba Milk Tea

Drinking Water

tbsp Thai Tea Mix

tbsp Brown Sugar

tbsp Sweetened Condensed Milk

tbsp Evaporated Milk

tbsp Creamer

tbsp Soft Brown Sugar (You can compare demerara

tbsp Boba Tapioca Bubbles in Caramel (Boiled and rinsed.)

Honey

1.5 tbsp Soft Brown Sugar

Boil the drinking water.

Add one tablespoon of Thai Tea Mix into the straining sock and hold over a heatproof measuring jug.

Slowly pour enough water on top of the tea in the straining sock until you have about 1/2 cup water in the heatproof measuring jug.

Move the tea strainer with the wet tea mix over a second jug and pour the hot tea through the strainer again

Repeat the process of pouring the resulting tea through the straining sock with tea, from jug to jug, a further two to three times to thoroughly extract the flavor from the tea mix.

After the tea brewing transfer from jug to jug leave the tea sock in the final tea jug to further steep for 5 minutes.

After the tea has brewed and steeped for 5 minutes remove the tea sock. Stir in the tablespoon of brown sugar into the tea until dissolved. Then stir in the tablespoon of creamer until thoroughly dissolved.

Mix together 2 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk with 2 tablespoons of evaporated milk. Add to the sweetened tea - either let it naturally mix or stir together as you you please.

Pour the finished Thai Milk Tea into a tall glass completely filled with crushed ice until three-quarters full

The hot tea will melt the ice a little so add a couple more ice cubes

Top off with evaporated milk that has been frothed in a frothing jug or similar. Do not stir again before serving

For Thai Milk Tea (Cha Yen)

Boba swells slightly on cooking. You will need as much boba as you will use for one day as it does not keep its consistency very well.

TIP - If you do have some leftover, then add a little sugar syrup or caramelized sugar syrup to coat and keep in the fridge. Microwave the following day for a few seconds to warm and the boba will be usable though not perfect.

Put the purchased boba balls into a pot of slowly boiling water and stir thoroughly. Continue to boil for about 30 minutes or so stirring intermittently.

After boiling turn off the heat and leave to sit in the hot water with a lid on the saucepan for a further 20 minutes.

Strain out the cooked boba into a strainer over the sink and rinse thoroughly with cool water. This stops the boba cooking further and helps keep the bubbles separated better.

Transfer to a storage jar. If you store at room temperature the bubbles will be less chewy but softer. If you put into the fridge then the bubbles will be harder and chewier. Your choice!

To make the Boba Thai Tea add 2-3 tablespoons of bubbles into your glass before adding the crushed ice. Top up with tea and the milk mix and top off with frothed condensed milk as in the main tea recipe above.

Optionally you can add a few boba bubbles to the top of the Thai Iced Milk Tea just to make it look nice. Serve.

Cooking Boba

Add the sugar and water into a saucepan and heat gently, stirring to dissolve the sugar into the water.

As soon as the sugar has dissolved, turn off the gas and add in the honey, stirring to mix together.

Note: This will make more caramel than you need but is about the smallest quantity you can feasibly make. Depending on how much you add to the boba, it should be enough for 3 cups of boba balls  Iced Boba Milk Tea.

Mix the caramel with the boba and stir to coat it ready for use for Boba Milk Tea

Thai Milk Tea Recipe & Boba Milk Tea Recipe

Learn how to make authentic Thai iced tea (Cha Yen) in two easy methods. Then indulge in the sweet, creamy, rich, and refreshing drink. It's the perfect drink to sip on all year round!

How to Make  Authentic Thai Iced Tea (Cha Yen)

Thai tea mix. Use less (2/3 cups)

sweetened condensed milk, 14-ounces can

salt

evaporated milk/serving glass

In a soup or medium-sized stock pot, heat water until boiling, turn the water off, and remove it from the stove. Add the Thai iced tea mix into the hot water, stirring well until all the leaves are submerged. You'll start to see some of the orange coloring coming through. Let it steep for 8 minutes.

While waiting for the tea to steep, add the sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and salt to a large heat-proof bowl, pot, or drink pitcher. Then use a spatula to whisk the ingredients together. Stir well.

When the timer is up after 8 minutes, use a tea sock, fine mesh strainer, cheesecloth, or a splash guard to strain the tea into a heat-proof glass bowl. A thick vase or water pitcher works great. Make sure they are heat safe!

Use a spatula or whisk to stir the tea and the condensed mixture. Have a small taste of the tea and add more sugar if desired. White sugar is better than brown for this recipe. If too sweet, add more salt to round out the sweetness.

Stovetop Method

In a teapot or soup pot, heat water until boiling. Add the tea mixture to a French press while waiting for the water to boil.

Pouring the hot water into the tea mix inside the French press. Stir well until all the tea leaves are submerged. Stir the Thai black tea leaves using a wooden or serving spoon with a long handle. Set a timer for 8 minutes.

Add sugar, salt, and sweetened condensed milk to a small pot, heat-safe, or a large glass bowl while waiting for the tea to steep. A thick wide bottom vase works well too.

After 8 minutes, pour the tea from the French Press into the glass bowl with sugar and milk in it. Use a fine mesh strainer, tea sock, or cheesecloth to catch additional loose tea leaves. (the French press won't strain without some loose leaves escaping into the serving bowl.)

Stir the hot tea well until the sugar and sweetened condensed milk is dissolved using a baking whisk or long wooden spoon. Use a large spatula to scrape the stubborn condensed milk on the bottom to get it to dissolve.

Taste the delicious creamy orange goodness. Add a small amount of sugar, salt, or more condensed milk as needed to taste. Let sit for 30-45 minutes to cool, or put in the refrigerator for a few hours. Prepare a tall glass with crushed iced, and leave 1-2 inches at the top.

Pour 1 cup of the finished Thai iced tea and top off with 1-2 tablespoons of evaporated milk.  Stir well with a straw and taste the delicious and famous Thai drink filled with remarkable flavors in your mouth. Use the drink to help cool off your mouth when eating spicy Thai foods! 

French press method

This easy, homemade Thai Iced Tea recipe allows you to have the taste of Thailand in your home and makes a delicious drink to accompany any Thai dish.

Tbsp. white sugar

Tbsp. Thai Iced Tea Mix

Heat the water and sugar until boiling in a microwave-safe French press or liquid measuring cup. Stir the water to ensure the sugar has dissolved, then stir in the Thai Iced Tea mix and let sit for 10 minutes to steep.

Plunge down the strainer if using a French press, or strain the solids out of the tea by using a fine mesh strainer, cheesecloth, or coffee filter.

Chill in fridge for 1 hour or until cold.

To serve, pour 8 oz. (1 c.) of tea into a tall glass over ice. Top with a slash of half-and-half. Drink immediately.

This Thai tea boba features a base of black tea, creamy milk, fragrant spices, and tapioca pearls. Cool down with your very own glass!

Creamy Thai Tea Boba (9 Ingredients)

cane sugar + ⅓ cup water

filtered water

loose-leaf black tea

star anise pods

green cardamom pods, lightly crushed

cinnamon stick

turmeric

coconut milk

simple syrup

Bring the water for the tapioca pearls to boil in a medium-large saucepan. Once boiling, add the pearls and lower the heat to just under medium.

Simmer for 15-30 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes to prevent sticking. Cooking time will depend on your specific pearls (check the package for instructions &mdash; mine take 30 minutes).

In the meantime, prepare the simple syrup. Add cane sugar and water to a small saucepan and whisk together. Bring to a simmer for about 3-5 minutes until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, reserve 3-4 tablespoons, then add the rest to a medium mixing bowl.

Strain the tapioca pearls through a fine-mesh strainer, rinsing them gently. Transfer the pearls to the mixing bowl with the simple syrup and stir to combine. Set aside for 30 minutes to soak.

Boba

While the tapioca pearls are soaking, add water, black tea leaves, star anise, cardamom, cinnamon, and turmeric to a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to a simmer for 5 minutes.

Once steeped, strain the Thai tea into a heat-safe container or pitcher. Add simple syrup and stir to combine.

Thai tea

Let the tea cool to room temperature. Add 3-4 tablespoons of tapioca pearls to a glass, folllowed by a handful of ice. Pour the Thai tea &frac12; - &frac34; of the way up, then coconut milk the rest of the way. Happy drinking!
