In a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, add beef. Cook until beef is dark brown and caramelized on one side before breaking apart, about 5 minutes.&nbsp;

Stir in green pepper, onion, and mushrooms and cook until softened, about 2 to 3 minutes longer.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl whisk together ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard.&nbsp;

Pour sauce ingredients over drained beef and stir until evenly coated. Cover and simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Meanwhile, preheat broiler on HIGH. Arrange split rolls on a baking sheet and broil until toasted, 30 seconds to one minute.

Divide mixture evenly on the bottom half of each roll. Top with cheese and broil until the cheese is melted, about 30 seconds to one minute. Top with buns. Serve with mayonnaise if desired.

In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onions and bell peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 6 to 8 minutes.

Add the beef and break up with a wooden spoon.  Cook until no longer pink, about 10 to 12 minutes.  If desired, remove the excess grease by tilting the skillet to one side, and remove the grease with a large spoon into a small bowl.  Leave about 1 to 2 tbsp in the skillet.

Add the beef stock, tomato sauce, chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, vinegar, brown sugar, salt, and pepper and bring to a simmer, stirring to fully incorporate.

Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 20 minutes until most of the liquid has reduced down, stirring occasionally.

Toast the buttered buns (a couple minutes under the broiler...but keep an eye on them!)

On a baking sheet, add a mound of meat mixture for each sandwich you are preparing. Place a handful of cheese on top of each mound of meat.  Place under the broiler until cheese has melted.  Keep an eye on them, don&#039;t let them burn!

Use a spatula to transfer the sloppy joe mounds topped with melted cheese onto the bun bottoms.  Add the top bun and serve at once!

I loved this recipe and it was a big hit with my roommates. I wish I had read the other comments first though, because it was definitely too sweet. I'd probably half the amount of brown sugar and add in a good helping of Worcestershire next time to give it the kick I like, but otherwise, very easy and yummy!

Way too sweet, and I like sweet. Sloppy joes should be spicy sweet. I used coconut sugar which isn't as sweet as brown sugar. I recommend adding a little brown sugar at a time until it is sweet enough got you. I ended up added twice the mustard and chili powder to knock down the overly sweetness. It was good, nice to make something with a premade packet.

I thought maybe people were exaggerating about the sweetness but it really was too sweet. But I fixed it by adding lots of ground pepper, and splash of Frank's hot sauce, doubled the mustard, and I thought it needed something else so I added a pinch of ground cinnamon. Also I saw the comment about adding the worcestershire sauce to reduce sweetness, but I didn't have any so I added a pinch of ground ginger and garlic powder. I added a bunch of stuff but overall I like this recipe as a base. Thanks!!

This nostalgic sloppy joe recipe features a ground plant-based meat substitute cooked with chunky vegetables in a sweet and tangy tomato sauce flavored with lots of delicious spices!

Sweet and Tangy Vegetarian Sloppy Joes

olive oil (extra virgin)

½ medium yellow onion (diced)

½ green or red bell pepper (seeded and chopped)

garlic (minced)

lb plant-based meat substitute (such as Impossible Foods

salt + black pepper (to taste)

garlic powder

herbs de provence (or Italian seasoning)

smoked paprika

turmeric (or ground mustard)

tomatoes

liquid aminos (or lite soy sauce)

balsamic vinegar

liquid smoke

dark brown sugar

hamburger buns (for serving)

Heat olive oil in a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add chopped onion and bell pepper and cook until onion is translucent, about 2-3 minutes. Add garlic and cook about another minute until fragrant.

Add meat and break apart with wooden spoon. Season with salt + pepper, garlic powder, herbs de provence, smoked paprika and turmeric. Cook until meat is browned and almost cooked through, stirring occasionally, about 3-5 minutes.

Add crushed tomatoes, liquid aminos or lite soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, liquid smoke and brown sugar to meat mixture. Stir to combine all ingredients. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered until thickened and reduced, stirring occasionally, about 10-15 minutes depending on your desired consistency. Remove from heat.

Toast four hamburger buns in the oven and top each bottom bun with a few spoonfuls of sloppy joe mixture. Add toppings if desired and enjoy!

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook penne, until tender yet firm to the bite, about 11 minutes. Drain.

Meanwhile, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil. Brown the ground beef and ground pork sausage, and drain off the fat.

Add the onion, and green bell pepper, into the hot skillet and cook 3-5 minutes until fragrant.

Stir in Manwich Original Sloppy Joe Sauce; reduce heat and simmer until heated through, about 5-10 minutes.

In a large bowl, mix together cooked penne, half of the cheese, and all of the ground meat and Manwich mixture. Stir together.

Pour into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Top with the remaining half of the cheese.

Bake in the preheated oven until heated through and cheese is melted, about 20 minutes.

Garnish with fresh parsley
